I know that I'm in the minority, but...
I struggled for a long time and it came down to two cameras. I read a ton of opinions and consumer reports. After looking at dozens of different cameras in the $150 to $250 price range, I purchased both the Olympus Stylus Zoom 140 and the Canon Classic 120. The bottom line is I went for the canon. And here's why.
When it comes down to it, the Olympus stylus did not put out the quality photos I expected. I know people are going to start throwing things at me now, this is a much loved camera. I compared both cameras and the Canon Sure Shot Classic 120 outperformed the Olympus in my opinion. I was able to see individual strands of hair I couldn't see on the Olympus. The Olympus photos also seemed kind of washed out compared to the Canon. Just to make sure it wasn't just me, I recruited the opinions of several of my friends. We all came to the same decision. The Canon looked better.
I liked the look of the aluminum Canon, but the Olympus had a very nice weather proof clamshell design. One is more flashy, the other is more practical. The Canon did however have more of a solid feel to it. I guess it comes down to personal preference.
As far as the flash goes they each have strengths and weaknesses. Both provide even flashes with no shadows. The Canon is a stronger flash giving a brighter picture. The downside to it is, it ejects out of the side and makes it hard to place your index finger. The Olympus is not nearly as strong but it ejects out of the top and is very unintrusive. The Olympus just didn't provide a strong even flash.
Both cameras have an adjustment that allows you to focus the viewfinder. The Olympus has a larger adjustment that is easier to adjust. The Canon has a larger viewfinder, easier to see what you're shooting.
Ease of use. The Olympus has a button you have to keep pushing until you get the power of flash and red eye just right. With some use, I guess you would get used to this. I really liked the Canon format though. You spin a dial to a specific style of photo. You have auto, a person running (action), a head shot (portrait), a night scene, a flower (close up), as well as another position you can customize.
The Olympus does have a more powerful zoom. While the Canon goes to 120, the Olympus goes to 140.
All said and done I really did prefer the Canon. I ended up returning the Olympus and keeping the Canon. I'm very happy with my decision. You can read all these opinions, but when it comes down to it, you have to decide what's important to you. After comparing the both of them I easily decided on the Canon. Above anything else, picture quality was the most important to me.
