| moonwalker84's Full Review: Panasonic RX-ES20 Cassette/CD Boombox |
I got this stereo for Christmas '01, and have been thoroughly satisfied with it. I was totally surprised to learn from my mother that it cost only $US95!
I was perhaps most impressed by the "Sound Virtualizer" feature. It can only be activated by remote, and creates incredible surround sound for such a tiny system. As the last reviewer put it, "like you're in your own little concert hall". (Try it with live recordings, like Pink Floyd's 'Pulse') Turn the Virtualizer off occasionally and hear the difference!
Built into the front of the system is a neat little LCD screen, which displays a cassette counter, CD tracks, and radio frequencies. It is great having a digital display to tune, as all my previous systems have had that damned "analogue" tuner where you turn the little wheel and have to take a guess as to where certain frequencies are.
You can also program in the time, and therefore set the alarm to wake you up with either the radio, CD or cassette in the morning. You can also tell it to turn off automatically in either 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or 2 hours, for when you're falling asleep listening to Enya and want to conserve power.
There's a neat little convienent feature for taping CD's onto cassette - you just type in the tracks you want taped and hit record! It automatically puts 10 seconds of silence before the recording, and if one side of the tape ends halfway through a song, it pauses the track and waits for you to flip over the tape! And if you program in a certain time and station, and it will tape down your favourite show.
Now to the cons. The headpone jack is incovientely located at the back, and there's no support for microphones. And if you unplug the unit, you have to reprogram the time and station presets. Apparently, you can buy "memory batteries" to fix this, but they weren't included and I don't know where to get them.
Overall, I have close to nothing but praise about this boombox. It's served very well as my personal stereo for almost a year now.
