Pros: DVD/VCR/CD player all in one
Cons: Need different color than silver
The Bottom Line: Would recommend very compact and functional. Aesthetics need addressing compared with GoVideo DVR4000

| mikeb0515's Full Review: Samsung DVD-V1000 DVD Player / VCR Combo |
I have procrastinated for several months on making a purchase for a replacement for our VCR. The old VCR (Sony) works well, but has the bad habit of not taking up the slack on the tape when unloading, with the consequence of the tape catching on one of the heads on eject. Spent many a frustrating time fishing the tape out with a bread knife and have broke several tapes in the process.
I first went out and purchased the Go-Video DVR4000. After checking around I discovered the Samsung DVD-V1000 is the identical unit (even has the same remote) but includes MP3 and Dolby 5.1 (which seems the same as the Go-Video DVR5000 which seems hard to come by) except a different faceplate.
DVD, TV, VHS all work well. Remote takes some adjusting too, have to wait a second or two for the event to occur, enough time to cause one to wonder if anything is working.
Switching between DVD VHS and TV seems to work okay when using the TV view button, using the DVD/VHS/TV buttons was a hit or miss affair.
DVDs take time to load. When watching 'Star Wars 1' filmed in 2.35mm (think that is the term) 30% screen taken up with the black borders, using 4:3LB. Changed to 4:3PS didnt make any difference. Changed to 16:9 and characters stretched on screen (tolerable) and very small black borders.
VCR works okay, I disabled the auto start mechanism. I also lock the front panel (a real bonus) as my 2 year old loves to play with buttons (probaly reason our old VCR is kaput - frequently had to remove pencils and pieces of paper from the tape loading tray).
Remote needs some lighted switches, and responsiveness needs definite improvement. Do like the minimal number of buttons on the remote, the setup menus seemed pretty intuitive.
MP3 works okay. Have had difficulty loading some of my MP3 CDs which work on my portable okay. I was pleased to see the file names (somewhat abbreviated) do appear on the screen. Would be a real bonus to see progress of the track playing on the screen. Navigation through the MP3 CD worked well.
Audio CDs worked okay. Cannot comment on the Dolby or DTS, dont understand why Dolby is enabled by default and DTS is not - as clearly states in documentation these should both be disabled unless using the special A/V connection.
