bdbauer's Full Review: Sony RM-VL700 Remote Control
I'd tried several pre-programmed remotes (with codes), and always ran into the problem that they don't program all the keys I need. So even with a universal remote, I still needed all those other remotes cluttering the coffee table. A learning remote removes this issue. This thing is a breeze to program (as long as you have the manual) - a device can be completely configured in a minute or so.
The other problem I've had is that some remotes didn't have the power to reach the TV very well from various angles. So we'd hit the buttons over and over again, sometimes accidentally hitting them too many times and selecting the wrong channel! This one has two infrared emitters, and always works, very snappy.
It doesn't have macros, but supposedly if you enter the two devices very quickly, it'll do multiple things with a single button push (see www.remotecentral.com). Really, if you want macros, you should move up the the RMVL900.
It have several keys (e.g. PiP) that don't show up on a lot of remotes.
The actually paid some attention to ergonomics with the remote - it fits in the hand really well, with volume and channels in the right place.
I paid $80 for a remote that didn't work half this well, many years back. For just a bit more than the non-learning models, this one adds both range and learning.
