| LafnSam's Full Review: JVC MX-G50 CD Shelf System |
There are many mini systems out there for less than $200 dollars that will serve most people's needs. If you want a little more bang for your buck without breaking the bank, the $200 range is where you want to be. Mainly, the extra money goes towards sound quality, more specifically bass. The MX-G50 blows the competition away in this department. The built in subwoofers are powered by 80 watts per channel, enough to rattle the walls and wake the neighbors. If you get a chance to demo this in a store, it sounds as good as some of the higher end systems in the $300 and $400 range. This system is perfect for a one or two bedroom apartment. I actually use it as a bedroom system. Don't worry, you can lower the bass to play music at night.
Features: The MX-G50 comes with a 3 CD changer, dual cassette decks, a radio, 2 speakers and a remote control. The remote control layout makes it very easy to use. With a little practice, I was able to use it without looking. The radio reception is good, stations actually come in better than my old Aiwa system that needed replacing. I have no use for the cassette decks but there are features to copy a prerecorded cassette to a blank cassette or to make cassette copies of your CD's so you can play them in your car tape player.
Besides the sound, I bought this system because it includes a digital optical output. This allows me to connect to my minidisc recorder and make high quality recordings. Very few mini systems include this output. If you don't have a minidisc recorder, it probably wont be of any use to you. There is also a auxiliary audio input which allows you to play the sound from your VCR or DVD player though the stereo. There are more expensive mini systems that come with 4 or 5 speakers designed to turn your room into a mini theater. The MX-G50 is not optimized for home theater sound, but it does just fine for the price. Another big selling point for me was that the CD player has no problems playing burned CDRs and CDRWs. Some of the older CD players have trouble with these disks.
Cons: One of the few things that I would like to change is the display. It's a little too bright. I like to play music to go to sleep to and it's taken a little getting used to having the room basked in a bright blue light. Luckily, the automatic sleep timer can turn off the MX-G50 after a set amount of time. Another minor annoyance is the amount of time that it takes for the CD changer to change disks. This is evident when you set 2 or 3 disks on random play, which I have sometimes used for parties. It just leaves a little extra silence between tracks, a problem that my Sony disk changer does not have. This may also be an annoyance when recording from multiple CD's.
After owning the MX-G50 for about a month now, I am very happy with my purchase. The sound goes as soft or as loud as I want it to be. It's easy to control the CD player and the radio from the remote. It does just about everything you would expect from a mid level mini system and it is competitively priced.
