| mgewecke's Full Review: Soyo DVR4000 DVD Player / VCR Combo |
For those who have wanted to upgrade to a DVD player, but wondered what to do with a huge VHS collection, here is the solution: Go Video's DVR4000. With side-by-side DVD and VHS slots, this unit provied maximum funcionality for the price. ALthough not as fully featured on the DVD side as some stand-alone DVD players, you get the basic features that you need.
This is my first DVD player, and I am very happy with my choice of players. For one, the design of the unit is sleek and simple, without a lot of clutter (tons of buttons, etc.) on the face. I got the unit up and running and programmed within 10 minutes. The manual is clear and concise, and the setup is easy.
The DVD picture quality is great, especially is you hook it up to your TV using RCA connectors rather than a coax cable cord. I have yet to hook up the player to my surround receiver using the optical connection, but that is my next step!
The picture quality is VERY sharp on both the DVD and VCR player. The VCR player also gives you an indication of where the tape is when you fast-forward and rewind, which is handy. The DVD allows you to search, pause, zoom, and get different camara angles (DVD media permitting). The remote is ok, but a bit tricky to figure out. That is my sole complaint about this unit.
Don't be scared of the "no-name" of GoVideo. From what I understand, this company is one of the first to develop such a dual player. The quality of the unit seems top-notch--no cheap plastic facings and rinky-dink buttons. The display is simple and nice as well (don't you hate displays that have zillions of indicators?).
So, that is my humble e-pinion. Keep in mind that I have not used many other stand-alone DVD players, so I don't have a terrific frame of reference. But, I am very happy with the DVR4000 and would definitely recommend it to a friend.
