| wmcot's Full Review: Soyo DVR4000 DVD Player / VCR Combo |
I have had my DVR-4000 for a few months and have not been that happy with the DVD functions of the unit. I am in the electronic repair business, so I thought I'd have a look inside. The DVD appears to use only a single laser for both CDs and DVDs compared to most decks which have a separate laser for each. The ICs on the main board run extremely hot which may lead to problems over time. I think this may be the source of my problems. When new, DVDs played fine, CDRWs played fine. After a coule of months, CDRWs would not play and DVDs began to skip at odd places (not bad discs). Now, DVDs skip excessively and occasionally "freeze" the picture for several seconds. I would be willing to bet that the excess heating of the main ICs has taken a toll on their functionality. As it is now out of the 90 day labor warranty, but still in the 1 year parts warranty, I will try replacing the laser and the main board.
Overall, I have not been that impressed with GoVideo products over the years. I only bought this because of the convenience of both decks in one. If I had it to do over, I would have bought two seperate decks. That way, if one fails, you don;t have to replace/trash the other one. It's cheaper to buy two decks anyway.
