| SHOSHOSHO's Full Review: Boston Acoustics PV1000 Subwoofer Speaker |
I could get away with just saying WOW! And it would be a good enough review.
A good Home Theater system relies on two things, Bass and Mid-Range. Of course you have to look elsewhere for the mids, but as far as lows go, there is no better.
Performance
If you don't already know, there are different characterisitics that you look for when considering a sub as opposed to other speakers in a home theater system. Whereas you would correlate wattage to volume in the other speakers, you correlate wattage to air moving capability in a sub. This means that a sub-woofers job is to move air, plain and simple. A good chest pounding bass sensation is the result of the sub-woofers ability to move air. You could probably feel a breeze in the room when this thing is going full throttle. The reason that this sub performs so well is the 1000 watt amplifier and dual 10" drivers. Even though you may feel that this sub is pricey at about $1,200, it is worth every penny. This sub should be considered the cornerstone of a high end Home Theater system. Read the specs for the full scoop. This sub is just awesome. You feel explosions. And I mean FEEL. One other thing, this sub is deceivingly small. Good for tight spaces. If you have an aprtment forget about this sub.
HOME THEATER SYSTEM
Again, the sub should be viewed as the cornerstone in a good Home Theater set up. I am using this sub with the following components:
(1) Onkyo DS 989 Receiver
(1) Polk Audio CSi30 center channel
(2) Polk Audio RTi70 Front L/R
(2) Polk Audio RTi28 Rear L/R
Basically this is a $5,500 system. If you are willing to lay out this kind of cash you will be well served. You could get away with using a less expensive receiver though as the Onkyo accounts for about $3,000 of the price tag.
Summary
This thing is a monster. It clearly blew away any of the other models that I compared it to. A considered Polk, JBL and Infinity. This one just blew them all away. And if I recall the closest competitor to this speaker was a 500 watt JBL that just did'nt compare. The best thing about 1000 watts of power is that it does just as well at low volume levels as it does at higher volumes. Even at low levels you can feel the bass. My Onkyo receiver has a "night time" feature which cuts the lows a bit if you have other members of the household who do want to be rattled out of bed. A have a 2,800 square foot house and there is not a room in it where you will not feel the bass when it is going full throttle. Keep small objects sufficiently secured as this thing produces wall rattling bass. This unit should also be used in a room with sufficient sound "dampening". A carpeted room at the very least as I would assume the bass could get a bit unrully without materials to absorb some of the sound.
Oh, one more thing, I do not want to give the impression that I am looking for house shaking bass and nothing else. I am really talking about the quality of the lows. This unit produces very deep quality lows. It fills the room with bass but supprisingly is never overpowering to the rest of the system.
