Pros: Great sound quality
Cons: Significant drop off in tone control
The Bottom Line: Although I still wonder about the Pioneer, I am very satisfied with the performance and the price I paid for this radio.

| rincon1840's Full Review: Alpine CDM-7871R Car CD Player |
Purchased this to replace a Sony CDX650 that had a bad CD player. I chose the Alpine over a Pioneer 4300. I had an
Alpine back in the 80's and the sound was great. So far, there are only two things I dislike about this unit: 1. For some reason, if you adjust the treble control from +4 to +5, there is a significant difference in response. Going from 4 to 5 can give you too much treble on certain music, but if you stay on 4, it's not enough. I've compensated by using +5, but setting the treble frequency adjustment to 15Khz. 2. When the unit (or car) is turned off, it causes my subwoofer to "pop", which is something the Sony didn't do. Hopefully it won't harm the sub. I haven't found a way around this.
This stereo has significantly better sound than the Sony. Appearance is nice. Volume control is very responsive. "Learning Curve" is fairly short. I like the motorized face. Although it doesn't have an equalizer, the bass and treble controls seem to be a fine substitute. It's much easier to adjust bass/treble than flip through different eq settings. Also, with the 3 pre-outs, this unit is set up for serious expansion.
