scoob-5's Full Review: BIC America ADATTO DV52si Main / Stereo Speaker
I did quite a bit of research for my rear surround speakers. I was about to go with some Cambridge S200 to match up with the side surrounds (CSW S300) but I decided the rears didn't need to be multipoles, too, and I focused on monopoles (direct radiators) instead.
Further research found excellent reviews on the BIC America DV52Si. Based solely on those reviews and the price ($90 delivered) I took that plunge.
The results of my gamble have been all positive. I installed on the ceiling in the rear of the room and began testing. Using our new Denon AVR-3803, i invoked the 7-channel stereo mode to hear how the BICs sounded. To be perfectly honest, I was stunned. The sound coming from these little boxes was BIG!
While I'm considering the accuracy relative to their size, I was very impressed. Of course they can't reproduce lows very deep (maybe 65-70 Hz), the midrange and high frequencies were very sweet. In our system (B&W DM602s front, B&W LCR600 center, CSW S300 sides), these speakers fit in nicely and the sound blends well.
A note on the ceiling mounting: notice the odd angles of the speaker. It is entirely functional with respect to different mountings. Since they are all-weather, mounting options are numerous and the cabinet itself has all of the keyholes necessary for all mounting options. Very versatile - and it saves you further money by not requiring separate mounts.
These speakers are so nice that I think it's a shame to have them in only a supporting role during movie watching. However, whenever I invoke the 7-channel stereo or DTS Neo modes, I always grin when I listen for these speakers. I think they'd be an excellent speaker for a budget theater system in the 5 main positions, as long as there was a good subwoofer to supplement the low-end.
