| seal-c's Full Review: MTX Thunder 4250D Car Amp |
Ok, I wanted to get this amp because it was recommended by a circuit city salesperson and because it was a brand-name amp. I was originally gonna use it to power a 12" alpine sub, which I was also planning on purchasing. When it came time for checkout, I got sticker shock. Everything added up to nearly $1,000.00! So I decided to call an installer who is a good friend of mine. He told me he could get better prices. After driving back and forth between three stores, we decided that a set of Pioneer VCCS Pro speakers in a sealed box and an Ultimate 750 watt amp would be the best setup for my large SUV (2001 GMC Yukon). My friend told me the best location to install the amp would be under the second row bench seat. However, the amp was too large and drilling through the steel bench legs would be required. Furthermore, my car jack would have to be removed and stored elsewhere. Call me crazy, but I like having an easily accessible and neatly stored car jack. We took the amp back, and I suggested we use the MTX 4250D, because it had a short footprint. The shop owner who sold us the amp had it powering two 1000 watt 10" woofers in a bandpass box. Oh, man they sounded NICE! He gave me a good price.
Well, making a long story short, we installed the amp, set the gains (a relatively easy process), and tested the amp. Oh man, this little sub kicks! It gives the Pioneers that "thump". You would not expect this kind of performance from a low wattage amp (250w @ 2 ohms, 125w @ 4 ohms). Now remember, this is the rating at 12.5 volts. MTX rates their amps using realistic power delivery from a typical car battery/alternator. Other manufacturers use 14.4 volts to rate their amps. At 14.4 volts (unrealistic, considering your car battery/alternator is powering other electric devices in your car) the rating goes up to a whopping 350w @ 2 0hms and 200w @ 4 ohms.
Another plus is that it has an input for an optional wired remote bass controller. With this baby plugged in, you don't have to dig in to your amp to make adjustments. That's what I'm going to have to purchase next. Did I mention that this thing has no problem with heat? Must be the MOSFET circuitry. This thing never gets hot.
At $200.00 bucks, I am very pleased and surprised at this amp's performance. MTX has a great product here. Remember, MTX uses competition performance parts in their products. I'm glad to know that I paid $500.00 for a set-up that sounds 2 times better than a system I was considering that costs twice as much.
