jimyster's Full Review: Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil for Windows
Well, Doom 3 came out last Friday the sixth, and hit the shelves at a whopping $54.99. And this weekend Fry's has a sale on Doom 3 for $43.99, and comes to like $47 after tax. They had a ton of them in stock at the Fry's in Plano, and said they've been selling a lot of them since the sale.
It came on three CD's and the installed directory size is 1.47gigs, which isn't huge by today's standard in bloating games. I wish they had it on DVD, but guess that hasn't caught on enough yet. It installs pretty smooth, and configuration is pretty straight forward simple like in past ID games.
The graphics are pretty stunning I must admit, though others review says Far Cry game has better environmental graphics. It was funny, because at the beginning, I couldn't tell when the introduction movie stopped, and the game began. I kept sitting there waiting for the next scene, but nothing was happening, hmm, was I locked up? I moved my mouse, and my view started moving, I was playing it, cool!
I have a 2ghz AMD 2400+, Ti4200 video card with 128megs, 512mg memory, and plenty of hard drive space for a large swap file it likes to make. So by today's standard, I have a hoe-hum system, an okay but not great computer. So on the graphics in the game, I set them to medium, 800x600, surround sound turned on (awesome) and find the game very playable playing the computer monsters.
However, in multiplayer, like any game, the requirements are much higher over the internet, and found it jerky, and hard to kill others. But at the same token, this game does not really sparkle right now in multiplayer. It offers only the standard game types, deathmatch, team deathmatch, and tourney one on one. Most games you'll see two to four people playing trying to kill each other, not near as much fun as UT2004 or Battle Field. Like most Id games, the mods in the future are what will make it, and I'm positive there will be plenty of them.
I can't say that I'm one to play games in stand alone mode much. However, this game is an exception, and even if it didn't offer multiplayer, I think this game would be worth picking up. You start off with a pistol, and have to kill I think zombies, and they never die with just one shot, unless you get them square in the forehead. I'm just at the beginning, and finally found a shotgun, and a very big monster! The graphics and sound just rock in this!
The only problem is it may give you the urge to run out and upgrade your memory, and video card to get better playing conditions ;-)
