When my husband had back surgery, I thought our days of camping were gone. We have always taken the kids camping in the summer, the more rustic the better. (Well for them anyway). I thought we were losing a big part of our summers and a whole lot of fun memories.
We went to visit my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and help them move and without having the beds set up, they pulled out an air mattress for us. Oh great!, we thought, this is going to be a comfortable night. To both of our surprises, it was not an uncomfortable night. A bed would certainly have been better but it was okay. As we lay there that night, we decided that we would try the Aero Deluxe AeroBed Mattress for camping. This was our deluxe solution.
The mattress is easy to set up. Pull it out of the bag and lay it where you want it set up at and plug it in. Whoosh, you have a mattress. Ours is queen and I have twins for each of the boys. They use standard sheets, and I just turn those that aren't nice enough to use at home into camping sheets. The Aero Deluxe is also cloth covered and comes with a mattress pad. This puts you a couple of layers away from that horrible plastic smell.
Now don't get me wrong, you can still smell it. I don't think that there is anyway to eliminate it, so I just inhale and dream of the beach because the smell reminds me of beach balls and rafts.
If you have over inflated the mattress, you can open the stopper and let out just the amount of air you want to fairly easily. The mattress stay well, without needing reinflated for a four day camping trip. We have not used them on one longer than that yet.
When it is time to break down camp, just open the plug, and whoosh, mattress is gone. Refold it, place it in it's bag and it's ready for the next trip.
We have unpacked and repacked our mattress up for about 7 or 8 camping trips and have never sprung a leak, but if you do, there is a patch kit included. I think that the mattress is durable enough to handle the floor of a tent with no problems. We never lay ours out on bare ground, though, so we have less of a chance of having something poke it.
My husband still doesn't rest comfortable out in the damp cold when we go camping, but without our Aerobed we wouldn't be going at all. It does help some just to be off of the cold ground and all the layers over the mattress not only help eliminate the odor, they seem to keep it a little warm.
The price is a little steep, but a got a good deal on the queen size at about $130.00, and we made the twin ones Christmas gifts one year, so that helped us to rationalize spending all that money on a non-necessity.
I have never tried another brand so I don't know how they would compare, but I know that we are pleased with the choice that we made.
