Pyr8's Full Review: Aiptek PenCam VR Digital Camera
I bought this little Device While at Best Buy. it was on sale for $30.00 and I needed something that would work as both a small audio recorder and a web cam. A working display model would have been great, I would have opted to pay for something more expensive. However, I took this device into my collective of computer toys and integrated it well with everything else as a web cam. and to that end I was ok with how well it functioned, however, when I tried to use it as an audio recorder it played back a very poor reproduction of the sound. I was not at all pleased it sounded as if someone was crackling plastic wrap over the microphone in places. I still make use of this device but, souly as a webcam.
The software installation to use it was very simple. driver detection was flawless. I installed it on to a windows 98 Machine into my second USB port, and everything worked great from the stand point of a webcam.
When I tried the various functions of the cam I found switching modes with the 3 millimeter button on the back, would stick and flip past the modes I wanted to try. This task became extreemly frustrating and I had to keep watching the symbols for each mode while reading the manual cause these symbols made no real sence in contrast to what the cam was supposedly doing.
The side connector that runs to the USB cable to plug it in to the system is very poorly designed as it has a tendancy to come unplugged unless I anchor the cable level to the cam.
However, I did find myself pleased, to note that every software I used to take pictures with it ( Adobe Photo Shop, Jasc Paint Shop Pro, America Online, Yahoo Messenger, and Microsoft NetMeeting ) all easily were able to Aguire pictures from it as a twain 32 device.
With all that it promised, and the little it delivered, I wouldn't advise buying it.
Yet, in defence of AIPTEK, Their website was Extreemly helpful in replacing my drivers when I lost the CD that came with it.
