| tamik98's Full Review: Aleve Pain Reliever |
This will be one of my shorter reviews, I think when it comes to over the counter medicines the average consumer wants to know 2 things: 1. What is the medicine used for? and 2. Does it work? In most cases these questions can be answered in a couple of paragraphs and don't require pages and pages of "fluff". That said, let me get on with my review.
Introduction
I first tried Aleve several years ago when it was a new product. At the time, I tried it for Migraine relief. Each tablet (or caplet) contains 220mg of Naproxen Sodium. It is advertised as a pain reliever/fever reducer.
Uses
The following uses for the medicine are listed on the back of the bottle:
Relieves aches and pains due to common colds, headache, toothache, muscular aches, backaches, menstrual cramps, minor pain of arthritis and temporarily reduces fever.
I have personally not found Aleve to be effective on my headaches when taken by itself. However; for stronger migraines I have found it effective if I take 1 Aleve followed by 2 Excedrin.
For the most part, I use Aleve for 2 reasons. Reason #1 being menstrual cramps. I have always suffered from severe cramps (sorry guys), and Aleve is the only over the counter medication I have found that offers some relief. I usually end up taking more than the recommended dose, due to the severity of my pain, but it does work.
The second reason I count on Aleve is for Insomnia. Though it is not listed in the product description, I find that taking 2 Aleve directly before going to bed allows me to fall asleep right away. Taken during the day, Aleve does not have the same effect on me. I am perfectly capable of staying awake and performing daily functions when taking Aleve during the day.
Dosage and Warnings
Recommended dosage for Aleve is 1 tablet every 8 to 12 hours. You may take 2 tablets for the initial dose if necessary. No more than 2 in a 12 hour period. Though I have said I often exceed this dosage, I don't recommend you exceed 2 tablets without checking with your doctor.
Children under 12 years of age should not take this medicine and adults over 65 should not take more than 1 tablet in a 12 hour period.
Naproxen sodium may cause an allergic reaction including hives, swelling, asthma, or shock. Naturally you should cease the medication and call your doctor if you suffer any side effects.
My Recommendation
I highly recommend this product for pain relief. The relief experienced by different persons for different symptoms may vary greatly. While it doesn't work on my Migraines, it may cure yours. While it puts me to sleep at night, it may keep you awake. No one can say exactly how any medication will effect every individual, but the next time you have moderate to severe pain that is not relieved by aspirin or Tylenol, I suggest you give Aleve a try!
