royaljel69's Full Review: Altec Lansing 221 2 Speakers
The Altec Lansing 221 (sub and 2 satellite speaker system) is an nice speaker package for it's price. My main comparison system was the Monsoon Planar Media 9 that was available for listening at the local electronics store. Side by side at the store, I found that the Altec's actually sounded better than the Monsoons (from the radio feed they offered). I also found the 221 sounded better than the ATP3's (also the 221 has more power, at 1/2 the price).
I find that the bass is very heavy, and can get quite distorted and "boomy" at high volumes. I had it placed originally on my desktop, but after I moved it down on the ground in a corner, the bass improved.
The 2 small satellite speakers are very sharp and crisp sounding, reaching nice highs when I listen to my opera mp3s. As for the 50W power, it's plenty enough to fill my computer room of 15' x 7', and I think it'll do well in a bigger room as well.
The only thing I wished these speakers had is a small corded remote control for volume, as well as a treble/bass setting. Some songs get too boomy and it would be nice to quickly lower the bass. Right now I'm using winamp's EQ to lower the bass, but with my portable mp3 player the bass is still too much despite the lowest setting.
Overall I'm happy with this set of speakers given it's price of $59.99 Cdn. If it's for use on computer games, mp3s and watching movies, then it'll do fine for those with a smaller to medium sized room.
Altec Lansing recently had a $10 USD rebate on these speakers. Check out your local store or their website for details.
