The walls in my dorm room were vibrating, the change on my dresser was bouncing, and the structural integrity of my window was about to be compromised . . . my neighbors were blasting their music for both the east and west coast to hear. I had to do something. I had to fight back. I had to get me some speakers!
My decision to purchase higher quality speakers wasn’t THAT militant, but I was about ready to ship my mouse-like computer speakers off on the next C-140 to the Middle East so the soldiers could have something for target practice.
After taking advantage of an excellent in-store speaker display at a local techie store, I decided the Altec Lansing ACS 54 Speakers were for me. Here’s why:
1) Surround sound.
a) I am hard-pressed to find a five speaker computer system that sounds as good as these speakers regardless of price. The four satellite speakers provide crystal-clear, medium to high range sound and the subwoofer subtly (or aggressively, depending on where you set it) adds the soothing low range to balance. Best of all, add a sound card with environmental audio built-in, watch The Matrix, and you swear Keanu Reeves is jumping up and levitating just behind you and a little to the left . . . ;-)
2) Compact.
a) The four satellite speakers have a very small footprint. They can easily fit on even the most cluttered desks. And the subwoofer will surprise you by emitting power that you can easily conceal behind your monitor or under your desk with very little space invested.
3) Price.
a) You can’t find a better deal. Believe me, I case out every speaker system I come across. My little Altec buddies and I have a good laugh every time we hear how much someone else spent for lesser speakers.
With my new speakers plugged into my computer, my dorm was more audibly pleasing than I had ever hoped. Now all I have left to do is recommend them to everyone I can . . . except my neighbors.
