| jps246's Full Review: America Restaurant |
Looking for a bite to eat any time of the day in the New York-New York Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas? If you are, you should stop by the America restaurant where you can get pretty much anything to eat 24 hours a day.
While I personally enjoy breakfast more than any other meal at America, the restaurant does serve lunch and dinner and has a late night menu should you find yourself hungry at 3am.
The menu is quite extensive all around with plenty of different breakfast, lunch and dinner choices. I doubt anyone would have trouble finding something to eat here.
Think classic American food. Theres nothing fancy about the America restaurant, but it does taste good.
Where do I find America?
The America Restaurant is located inside the New York-New York Casino and Hotel and is located on the casino level. Its near the main desk/check-in area and also close to some of the elevators to the hotel rooms. Its also easily accessible from the casino floor itself.
There are no reservations at America so sometimes the line can be fairly long. However, the dining room is quite large and the turnover is fairly quick, so the line always seems to be moving. I havent waited more than 20 minutes or so to get a table at any time of the day. During the off-peak times theres almost never a line.
Ambiance and Service
This is a big restaurant and it moves a lot of people throughout the day. Thus you shouldnt expect any fancy dining or outstanding service. The point is to get you in, take your order, get your food and have you on your way to make space for the next table full of people.
That said, the dining experience isnt bad here. The overall setting is fairly nice, though the tables are a closely packed and it can get quite noisy. You really cant hear the casino noise though, which is a nice change, since most of the dining room area is well removed from the casino floor.
My favorite part of the restaurants setting is the large America map that they have hanging. Think of a giant plaster map (90 feet by 20 feet!) of the United States complete with rivers, mountains, cities and more. Being a map lover in general, I enjoy checking it out each time Im there and its fun to point out different things to people who may not have eaten there before.
My biggest complaint about the service at America is that they tend to sit you and forget you, especially once theyve taken any sort of order from you. It can be hard to get refills on drinks and coffee and sometimes it seems to take an inordinate amount of time for your food to come out. Though the slow food seems to be a function of the amount of business they are doing the more crowded the dining room, the slower the overall food production. We havent had any really long waits, but there have been a few times weve sat there, especially at breakfast wondering what was taking so long to make some eggs and pancakes.
My favorites
I love the steak and eggs here. I dont know what it is about casinos and steak and eggs, but I always seem to enjoy having this dish when Im in a casino and here at America its no different. You get a good sized steak and two eggs anyway that you like them along with toast and hash browns. I also like the Empire State Plate that gives you two eggs the way you like them, hash browns, toast and bacon or sausage. Sometimes I add a short stack of pancakes to go along with it.
For lunch and dinner times Ive been known to stick with the breakfast foods, but America also offers plenty of traditional American favorites like burgers and sandwiches. I usually go with the hot open faced turkey, but they do have some decent steaks and the french dip is pretty good.
Others Ive been with have liked the Philly cheese steaks and the various salads that they offer.
The regular menu is quite robust with a number of different entrees that includes steaks, chicken and seafood. There are also entrée salads, a late breakfast menu (you can still get that steak and eggs!), burgers, sandwiches and pizza. The appetizer list is quite long too, though we usually skip it as the portion sizes on the meals is large enough that if you had an appetizer too, youd probably be unable to eat most of your meal. In addition to the regular menu, America does run specials that are advertised as you come in, its worth checking them out as you can sometimes find some pretty good meals.
Probably the only thing weve never tried in all our visits to America is the pizza. Otherwise we havent come across anything that we havent liked.
The late night menu is a bit more concise but includes a short breakfast selection (though steak and eggs is still there) along with some entrees, salads, burgers and sandwiches.
We mostly go to America for breakfast when we stay at New York-New York. Even when weve stayed at other nearby casinos, weve made a trek over here to eat since comparatively speaking, its the best deal for breakfast youll find nearby. For lunch and dinner (or perhaps a late night craving), weve also stopped in to America, especially when weve been staying at New York-New York since it is so convenient.
Price
This is Las Vegas after all, so expect the prices to be more than youd pay in most other areas (unless you live in a city). Breakfast usually runs around $15 per person when you factor in drinks and everything while lunch and dinner go anywhere from about $15 to $20 per person depending on appetizers and drinks.
America is probably one of the most reasonably priced full-service restaurants in this area of the Strip. Most other places in the nearby casinos have prices that are at least a bit higher for similar food.
Final Thoughts
The main reason Im not going with 4-stars for America is the lackluster service we've gotten a few times. Youd think they could be a bit more attentive and quick for a restaurant of this size. Otherwise we really havent had a problem with the restaurant and we have been here several times over the years we've been visiting Las Vegas.
While the food isnt spectacular, it is solidly good and Ive never had a complaint about food quality. You also get good sized portions at a decent price for this part of Las Vegas. All in all, theres not much to complain about and theres plenty to enjoy.
If you are staying in New York-New York or are passing through the area and want a meal, the America restaurant is a good choice for a meal at any time of the day.
