| ejdish's Full Review: Apple PowerBook G4 15.2 in. (M8859LL/A) Mac Notebo... |
Let's go over something. If you own a laptop, you should own a Mac. A lot of people say, "Everyone where I work uses a PC and I need to be compatible." Newsflash...it is. Office for OSX is completey PC compatible and Mac can even network now with Windows XP without any software add ons. The 17" is too big. It looks cool but remember a laptop is supposed to be portable and the 17" is thin but wide. The 12" is a step down. It's great for a kid or college student but the 15.2" widescreen is still the way to go. I can use it while watching TV on my lap connected wireless to the Airport base.
Let's get to the features. To start the display is gorgeous. I only use it when I have it downstairs because I have it hooked up to an Apple HD Display. This widescreen is just beautiful though and has a ton of space to do many things while being portable. The battery life is also amazing. Most laptops give you very little time, but I find I get close to 3 hours on the Powerbook. I thoroughly enjoy the DVD RAM drive. It's a great source to back up. I upgraded the machine with a 1gig memory upgrade and a 60 gig hard drive. Both are wonderful upgrades.
One small thing I love is the power cord. I know it's a small feature. But the ability to take it apart to make it a small travel charger is great.
The bluetooth is great but I haven't really used it. The airport is fantastic. I can't get over how fast it is and how good the reception is. I think now however, that I could've skimped and bought a different brand base and it would've been just as good. But I love having the airport built right into the machine.
As a computer it is totally a desktop replacement. It has all the ports you would find on the back of any machine. I'm able to connect a firewire hub, an editing keyboard, a dv deck, a monitor, and some usb devices all to the back of the powerbook. If you are as portable as I am I would suggest getting a docking station. It would be a worthy investment that way you don't have to go pulling out cables every time you want to go portable.
If you are looking for a laptop and are ready to get a computer that just works, buy a powerbook. It not only is flawless, it is powerful, fun to use, and ultra cool looking. And I got a student discount, which you can get also cuz Apple doesn't trace it!
