chiminou's Full Review: Apple iPod 5th Generation White (30 GB) MP3 Player
I have to admit, I too was seduced by the iPod. The Hype got to me too.I believed this item would suit all my needs, no matter the high price.
I read reviews and surfed the web. All indications were good. The iPod video had all the requirements I was looking for and even more; it even had video, which I did not really need. I thought it would be neat, an extra.
I was attracted by the nice LCD screen sharp images, and seeing the art album along with each songs.
I could not imagine that such a high-profile product would not be all that!
Let me summarize the features seperately.
PHOTO viewing
It works quite well. iTunes will resize the files in a smaller size so they do not take as much space on the ipod, though the images remain very sharp and clear. You can view them one by one, surf through your folders or display them in a diaporama.
Video viewing
The guy that sold the iPod to me left a small video on the device. It worked well. But that was about it. I tried converting a music-video with the iTune software, it took a long time and only the image was displayed on the iPod, no sound. I have not tried anyfurther. The iPod does not play the popular extensions like .avi nor mpeg.
MUSIC playing
First lets explain about browsing in the iPod... It is not so easy to find songs in there... iTune transfers the songs but sometimes,it repeats the same artist's name many times, finding one particular song can take a long time. If you've got the same song in different format, the formats aren't displayed (.wav or .mp3 ect..) so there is no way to know which one to pick (unless the titles are different).
While you browse, you cannot change the volume level: That is very annoying. Plus the click wheel is TOO sensitive, really not for commuters. After a week, I missed using the remote of my old imp-550 from iRiver.
Now as far as the sound is concerned I was very disapointed. I could not really find an EQ preset that was right for me. I did not like the sound image much, it's too bright, lacking bass and warmth(as I read on the net in a few reviews). And there's no programmable preset on the iPOd (but it is possible to do it thru the iTUne software). VOLUME: I couldn't listen to the music very loud, cause it distorted!! I was shocked that such an expensive device would be so limited as far as sound is concerned. I use the same old headphones (Portapro from Koss) which always worked very well. I compared my imp-550 player to my new iPod and confirmed that my old imp550 is really superior sound-wise and feature wise.
OTHER CONS
Surface and screen gets easily scratched and the silver back gets smugged with finger prints. Gotta keep it hidden in a case, so much for the nice look uh?
It is not possible to insert art files within songs in wav format. Though other music software can.
Expensive. Fragile.
iTune is not so fun to use. I prefer another music software, but iPod can only use iTune.
Charging it to a full load takes a long time, over 4 hours. And while it charges, it is not possible to play with it.
It comes with the usual white ear plugs, USB cable, a small white case, 2 apple stickers and the iTune software all packed in a neat black box. Instruction manual is available online.
In conclusion:
Of course the iPod is sleek and can hold an entire library. It is slim and very portable, never skips and can play videos and music kinda fairly. But it is not for the audiophile, nor for the iRiver-lover.
I bought it for only 250$ cdn and will sell it back. I cannot use a player that does not sound good!
To me, it is all about the sound!
