New Gel Lyte DS restores my faith

After a not so pleasant experience with my previous pair of Gel Lyte's (see epinion @ http://www.epinions.com/sprt-review-2DF8-4A6798-386006C5-bd4), I read with interest an article on the latest model Asics were launching. They claimed to have made the Gel Lyte stiffer, more stable but also lighter and more streamlined. After some research in local stores and on the internet I decided to give them another chance and use up a $20 coupon I had for Road Runner Sports at the same time.
When they arrived in the mail a couple of days later I was eager to try them out. The good thing about Asics running shoes is that they're usually ready to go straight from the box - no painful 'running them in' workouts like some of the other brands.
My first impression was not only how light they were (10oz for the mens model), but also how cushioned they appeared to be - nice and 'springy' but very stable too. I like the inbetween racing / training category that are light enough to race in but also give enough support to train in too - these fitted the bill perfectly.
The Gel Lyte series has been popular for over 10 years now, but this is the most streamlined and lightest yet. Looking at the official specifications this new model has a single density midsole (instead of 2 density) which helps with it's streamlining and cuts down on that 'bulky' feeling you sometimes have wearing a running shoe.
I also liked the way it seemed to wrap around the rear of my foot and give extra stability there, something that was lacking in my last pair. It's a very snug fit but not to the point of discomfort.
This model is fine for fast-paced workouts but also an especially good, lightweight shoe for longer races. It has forefoot and rearfoot cushioning and comes in half-sizes from 6-13 for men (also size 14) and 5-11 for women. Color option - bright yellow / white / silver.
All in all I'm very happy with my purchase, so much so that I've bought another pair in time for when these wear out. It can be frustrating sometimes - you find a shoe you love and the manufacturer discontinues it almost as quickly as it's launched. Hopefully that won't be the case with the new Gel Lyte DS
