| jedwards83_8's Full Review: AudioBahn AW1200 Car Subwoofer |
I purchased these subs having used Audiobahn in the past (Alum 12 subs and amp) with great results. This time i was going for SPL at the lowest price, so chose the AW1200 series. The specs looked great for the price-- 700w rms, 2.5" voice coil, 4 ohm DVC.
Looking for maximum SPL, I put each sub in a 2.5 cf ported enclosure tuned to ~43hz. I found out the hard way (ears hurting) that SPL was the least of my worries. These things hit HARD. They don't clear the 35-20hz notes well, because of the ported enclosure (had to use a subsonic filter ~35hz to prevent damage to the sub), but anything around 40-50hz just knocks your head around.
Sound quality is what's expected in a ported box, decent but not comparable to a sealed box setup. No noticeable distortion at any volume or frequency. The only distortion I hear are windows rattling.
I originally set these up in an '01 Jetta where I had to place the boxes awkwardly to fit.. Not a person I showed could believe these were Audiobahns. These would take people's breath away, you could feel the bass on your ear drum. Later I sold the Jetta for a Nissan Frontier Crew Cab. Placed these speakers rearward on the back seat, and the bass is not as pronounced and has more distortion. Characteristics of the vehicle I suppose.
I have owned these for about three years and I do not regret buying these and would recommend them to anyone on an SPL budget. Very reliable.
