These are harsh times, and this book treats them harshly. Because my family has traipsed through similar woods, valleys and mountains, I really enjoyed reading this book. It gave insight into my mother's turmoil when my sister and I were rebelling strongly against her authority and even her presence in our pre-teen and teen years. This is what divorce does to children. This is what a structure-free lifestyle does to children. This is what the Boomers' own rebellion is doing to their Gen X children. The author has been where her child has been, but now her daughter goes even deeper, even further into a pit of self-destruction.
The language is real. The feelings are real. This book is raw. If your children have turned against all authority in their lives, and chosen drugs over you, you will appreciate knowing that others feel what you cannot put into words. The guilt. The struggles. The despair. This author can relate to you - and maybe help you feel right about your choices, or help you decide to choose differently.
