Let me start off this review by explaining my skin type. I have very fair sensitive skin. It is difficult finding a skin cleanser that does not dry out or break out my skin, or leave my face with red splotches. I came across this product while yet again trying to find a good cleanser. I have had wonderful experience with Aveeno and their products are well known to be good for sensitive skin so I decided to try it out.
The packaging:
Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser comes in a 6.7 oz bottle that is actually very pleasing to the eye. It has no bright obnoxious colors or shapes, just a simple slim design that would fit in almost any bathtub or shower shelf that is colored with simple creams and greens. I don't like to use products where the bottle pretty much blinds you when you jump in the shower in the morning. I like my showers to gradually wake me up while still being relaxing, so it is important to me that my bath products reflect that as well. It is made of tough yet somewhat flexible plastic and has a pump on the top that can be locked if packing your cleanser for an overnight trip. The pump also squeezes out just the right amount for one face cleaning. No having to pump more than once and no having to feel like you are putting your face through cleanser overkill.
Claims:
Oil-Free, Hypoallergenic, Soap-Free, Noncomedogenic.
Lift away dirt, oil and makeup without over-drying for naturally radiant skin.
How to Use:
Make sure to shake well before use, although I have a tendency to forget this step and haven't has any ill effects as of yet. Moisten face, pump cleanser onto hand work into a lather in face and rinse. I usually do not use this with a washcloth as I found that the Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser is enough on its own and washcloths can be too rough for someone with sensitive facial skin.
My Experience:
As I mentioned above, it takes a very special product to work well on my skin so I paid a lot of attention to how my skin reacted to this product. One press of the pump released the perfect amount of cleanser into my hand. Wonderful since it is rare that a product does just that. I was also quite pleased to find that the scent is not overwhelming. It does smell a little soapy, but I would rather that than a lot of fragrance anyway.
I wet my face, rubbed the cleanser around on my hands a bit and then rubbed it gently around on my face paying close attention to the eye area. I have a habit of wearing my makeup to bed at night, so even though I need a product that is especially gentle, I also need one that can get rid of all of my makeup including eye makeup. While washing around my eyes this product did not sting one bit. I am sure it would burn if I put it directly into my eyes, but it did not soak through my eyelashes at all. It felt smooth on my face and when I rinses it came easily off without any lasting residue. Just a note, this cleanser is not a foaming cleanser, so while you do a get a bit of a lather it is not much and adding more cleanser to get more lather will only dry out your skin.
When I got out of the shower and dried off, my face felt soft to the touch and very clean. All my makeup including the pesky eye makeup was removed successfully, no raccoon eyes here! There was no drying or tightening effect and I was able to apply my moisturizer and makeup without any trouble whatsoever.
Over the few months of using the Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleanser, my face has remained soft and I have grown to love this product. There has been no dryness or tightening of the skin and I have noticed a lot less redness and blotchiness. I have had fewer breakouts and my skin tone does seem more even.
I have noticed though, if you use this product with a washcloth, you are more likely to experience redness, dryness, and skin irritation. This is not necessarily from the product but from the washcloth over scrubbing your face and causing tiny tears in the skins surface. If you have tears or cracks in your skin any type of cleanser, no matter what brand, will cause more irritation. The best way to cleanse the skin everyday is by applying your cleanser to your hands and using your hands to gently rub and rinse. The more gentle you are on your skin, the fewer wrinkles and sags you will have later.
