| thebowkers's Full Review: Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Maker |
Our youngest decided he "had to have" this toy from Santa this year. So Santa obliged and dropped one off under our tree. The ice cream maker itself comes with 2 packets of ice cream mix, bubble gum and vanilla; with more available for purchase where you buy the ice cream maker.
Out of the box, it's obvious that little thought has gone into the design of this item. It's made out of thin plastic that isn't made to handle anything near the stresses of use that this item is put under.
Everything goes along fine as far as making ice cream is concerned, but when it's time to scrape the ice cream off of the drum that freezes the ice cream, everything falls apart,,,,, literally. The plastic sides bow out under the stress of turning the drum against the built in scraper and the gears come out of mesh,,,, or,,,, if you manage to find the spot to hold the sides in on the maker and manage to turn the drum to scrape off the ice cream, the gear/crank handle assembly twists and turns under the torque required to turn the drum.
We ended up taking the drum out of the unit and scraping the ice cream off with a butter knife,, which worked,,, but that's NOT the way it's supposed to happen. Add this to the fact that you get about 1 scoop of ice cream out of each packet, and you're really starting to feel ripped off,,,, not to mention sticky...
I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone who I liked, that's for sure.
My recommendation is that you take the $24.95 and take your family out somewhere for ice cream,,, or spend an additional $15 and buy a 1 quart maker from Tavolo.com and get something that will work.
