chelledun's Full Review: Bath & Body Works Pleasures Body Lotion
My siblings-in-law always, always, always give me Bath & Body Works for the holidays. I guess it is the classic Hey, I know youre a girl, but beyond that, not that much about you gift. Typically, whatever the gift set is includes at least one scent of Pleasures Body Lotion. While I subscribe to the philosophy of dont look a gift lotion in the mouth, I think these lotions are pretty much just okay.
General Information
Pleasures Body Lotion comes in an army of scents. These include old standbys like Sun-Ripened Raspberry, which was the first lotion I ever owned in approximately fifth grade, as well as newer scents like Cherry Blossom and Coconut Lime Verbana. New scents are cycled in and out seasonally. All lotions in the Pleasures line are packaged in the same clear plastic bottles. Every scent can be purchased in the 8 ounce size for $9.50, and some are available in travel sizes as well. These products are frequently part of the special buy three get one free promotion for Signature Collection scents, and I try to wait until this special is available to purchase anything in the Signature Collection.
My Experience
I think maybe Bath & Body Works tries to be too ambitious with Pleasures. For example, the label of the Sun-Ripened Raspberry variety proclaims,
The scent of berries, ripened in the summer sun to deepen their fragrance, blended with a hint of green vine make this delectable fragrance positively irresistible.
Come now, a hint of green vine? To be honest, I think Sun-Ripened Raspberry is kind of gross, as are Cucumber Melon and Juniper Breeze. Unfortunately, I am currently in possession of all of these scents. Scents I do like include Warm Vanilla Sugar, Mango Mandarin, and Moonlight Path. I realize that scents are highly subjective to begin with, but I think Pleasures scents invoke a particularly strong love/hate reaction. My husband actually refuses to even go in Bath and Body Works (although he likes The Body Shop okay), so he must fall on the hate side of this line with all of the scents. Ive tried a dozen or so different varieties of Pleasures over the years, and in my opinion none of the scents are quite as decadent as those of similar products from The Body Shop or Philosophy.
This lotion does moisturize, to a point. It works perfectly well as a basic body lotion for my arms and legs as long as my skin is in normal shape to begin with. I dont think it works particularly well on especially dry spots. Pleasures body lotion is very watery, which isnt my preference. I like a really thick body lotion with a butter consistency. If you prefer a more moist consistency to your lotion you will probably like Pleasures.
Overall
I find Pleasures Body Lotion to be hit and miss. The consistency is never ideal to me, but some of the scents are quite nice. Others just gross me out. I could really vary my rating for this product between one and four stars, depending on the scent I was talking about. On the whole, though, I find pleasures to be very average lotion, and not a product I would purchase for myself. Of course, I have twelve gallons of the stuff in my bathroom, and I am quite sure I will be receiving a half dozen bottles come December.
