| stw63's Full Review: Bauer Supreme 5000 |
Not the absolute top of Bauer's line, this is still an extremely good skate for those of us who are not quite NHL prospects. The 5000's offer pretty much all the features of the 7000 but in a slightly less stiff package.
Be assured that you are still dealing with a very stiff, powerful package here. This is a serious skate for serious players. It requires a significant break-in period. I got them 'baked' to soften the memory foam and fit them to my feet; and this worked very well. However, I still needed to play in them for a month or so until they were truly comfortable. For that first month, I did put up with some real discomfort.
Even with the pain, I could immediately realize the higher performance of these skates. I was moving up from the Supreme 1000 model; and the difference is significant. Now that they have been well broken in, I wonder how I ever played without them. The skates transmit far more of your muscle energy to skating speed and efficiency. There is no sloppiness to them at all. They are sports cars for your feet.
I've now played a year and a half of adult-league hockey in them and I'm extremely satisfied. Frankly, they're far and away the best skates I've ever owned. They are getting a bit cut up, but it is only cosmetic damage. The durability seems to be above average.
These are pretty serious skates. I would not recommend these for players who are not playing hard and often. If you have the patience to break them in and are looking for a skate that delivers higher performance than the base models (but do not need to pay for or endure the real professional model), then this is a superior product.
