sggirl27's Full Review: David Eddings - Belgarath the Sorcerer
"That'd be quite a story," Durnik said.
"What would?" [Belgarath]
"Everything you've been through-saving the world, fighting Demons, pushing the Gods around, things like that."
"Tedious, Durnik. Very, very tedious," Belgarath disagreed. "There were long periods when nothing was happening. You can't make much of a story out of a lot of people just sitting around waiting."
"Oh, I'm sure there were enough lively parts to keep it interesting. Someday I'd really like to hear the whole thing-you know, how you met Aldur, what the world was like before Torak cracked it, how you and Cherek Bear-shoulders stole the Orb back-all of it."
Belgarath laughed. "If I start telling THAT story, we'll still be sitting here a year from now, and we won't even be halfway through by then. We've all got better things to do."
"Do we really, Grandfather?" Garion asked. "You just said that our part of this is over. Wouldn't this be a good time to sum it all up?
And that's where this all started. With enough goading from two of his closest companions, the Eternal Man, Ancient Belgarath, is talked into writing all the events of the history of the world. But Belgarath is a storyteller by nature, and through his eyes we not only see a colorful description of the ancient feuds between Gods and the races of men, but we look deeper into the life of Belgarath himself. For all storytellers can't help but to embellish their accounts and how their lives tied into it.
For those of you who have already read The Belgariad and The Mallorean, there will be several instances where you'll just want to smack your forehead and say,"Ah! I get it now!" You also get to meet all six of Belgarath's socery brothers WAY before the "Cracking Of The World." The sophisticated Belmakor, the zealous Belzedar, the emotional Belsembar, the gentle twins Beltira and Belkira, and the unforgettable ugly little hunchback Beldin, whose logic and quick wit are easily a match for Belgarath's.
The past has never been brought to life so imaginatively as the Eddings have done in this glorious masterpiece. As for the rest of the contents of this book, the back cover says it the best, and I will quote it..
"When the world was young and Gods still walked among their mortal children, a headstrong orphan boy set out to explore the world. Thus began the extraordinary adventures that would mold that youthful vagabond into a man, and the man into the finely honed instrument of Prophecy known to all the world as Belgarath the Sorcerer.
Then came the dark day when the Dark God Torak split the world asunder, and the God Aldur and his disciples began their monumental labor to set Destiny aright. Foremost among their number was Belgarath. His ceaseless devotion was foredoomed to cost him that which he held most dear-even as his loyal service would extend through echoing centuries of loss, of struggle, and of ultimate triumph."
