| francesca57's Full Review: Benefit Boi Ing Concealer |
In late December, I wrote a glowing review of Bobbi Brown Professional Concealer. Always searching for a concealer that really works, I gave Bobbi Brown a try. Although not perfect, it was the best I had tried to date.
Not too long after that, I read a review of BeneFit Boi-ing Concealer. It sounded great, but I was happy with Bobbi Brown, and fought my inclination to give it a try. But recently, poking around Sephora.com, and investigating the newest products that I just couldn't live without, I ran across Boi-ing. The product information page called it "industrial-strength", claimed it "pops out those yuckie dark circles" (my main problem), and that it "really works." Ok, Boi-ing was promptly added to my shoping cart.
Packaging
Boi-ing comes in a simple, round, pot-style container with a clear plastic top. As a frame of reference, the size is larger than your average eye shadow pot. This makes it easy to access the product with a brush or your finger. I use the latter.
Color Selection
Sephora.com offers Boi-ing in only two shades; light and medium. The medium works for me, but looking at both shades, a few more would certainly make it more user friendly. A recent trip to BeneFit's website revealed that they do make one more shade, dark, which although helpful, still doesn't provide enough variety.
My Experience With The Product
BeneFit Boi-ing had a bit of a rocky start with me. I used it within hours of delivery of my order. When I opened it, there was a layer of moisture beaded up on the top. I thought this was odd, but attributed it to the fact that it had been outside my door, in cold weather, and then brought inside to a warm house. I used a tissue to blot it up, and noticed that it left an oily residue. Not a good sign!
When I applied it, the feel was a bit odd. First, as I ran my finger across it, it felt slightly gritty. Every other cream concealer I had used was totally smooth in texture, so this concerned me. Then when I applied it to my face, although it didn't feel gritty on my skin, it did seem a bit too slick. I took a quick peak at the ingredients and learned a little more about the product. The first three ingredients were petroleum jelly, corn oil and soybean oil; the obvious reason behind the slightly more greasy feel. The fourth ingredient was french chalk, I assume the reason for the slightly gritty feel.
I went ahead and applied it to the areas that needed some concealing, then applied my foundation. The coverage was very, very good and was generally comparable to the Bobbi Brown I was using. I used it again the next day, and it really looked good. Used to the slightly different feel, the slick feeling that had turned me off the day before, now just felt like silk as I applied it.
On the third day, I decided to wear both Bobbi Brown and Boi-ing for a direct comparison. I used one on the left side of my face, and the other on the right.
The Bobbi Brown was a thicker cream, and applied smoothly, but not as smoothly as the Boi-ing which really glides on. Once on, the coverage again was very similar, though the Boi-ing did better on my under-eye circles. After applying foundation, I compared the two products again. Because of the thicker texture, Bobbi Brown was noticeable through the foundation in some spots. You could actually see areas that seemed "thicker" on my face, and gave an uneven texture to my complexion. The Boi-ing resisted creasing all day, but the Bobbi Brown began to crease slightly as the day wore on. Both did provide coverage that lasted all day.
Price
The cost was $18.00, less expensive than the Bobbi Brown Professional Concealer. It also appears to have a slightly higher quantity of product.
Where You Can Buy BeneFit Boi-ing
BeneFit products are available online at their website, benefitcosmetics.com, and at Sephora.com. BeneFit's website also has a list of brick and mortar stores in your area that carry their products.
The Verdict
Boi-ing wins out as the best all around concealer that I've tried. It provides great coverage, a natural look, and has staying power.
