| dawnygirl725's Full Review: Best Western President Hotel |
I recently stayed at the Best Western President Hotel located in Midtown Manhattan. The exact address is 234 West 48th Street - approximately 12 blocks from Penn Station. My fiance and I live on Long Island, NY and decided to go stay in the city for a 2 night get-a-way. We didnt want anything too pricey so decided to do a search for budget hotels in the area. Expedia came up with a rate of $130 a night plus taxes which seemed great for a Manhattan location. We called and booked a 2 night stay, October 24th and October 25th at the Best Western President Hotel. I will just say that if you are only looking for a great location and dont care about much else, then this is a good choice. If other factors come in to play for you, I would suggest booking your stay else where.
Location:
It is located in midtown Manhattan and centrally located to a lot of things you may be wanting to visit when in NYC. We managed to walk to practically everywhere we went. It is blocks away from Central Park and Times Square. We even walked there from Penn Station too - although that was a bit of a trip. There are lots of restaurants and shopping all near by as well.
The Welcome:
If you want to call it that. Dont expect any kind of customer service what-so-ever. The front desk staff is terrible. Nasty. Rude. Short. Unwilling to help. They basically made me feel as though they were doing me a favor by letting me stay at their hotel. I overheard other people in the lobby with the same complaints. However, I will say that we arrived at 3 Pm on the nose and the room was ready as promised (check-in is at 3)
The Room:
About the size of a shoe box. The so-called Queen bed was in actuality a full size. There was a desk and chair and one night table squished in as well. There was a small closet that contained an iron and ironing board and safe for your possessions. We were located on the 9th floor and it was hot as anything up there. It was 40 degrees outside and we had the air conditioner on all night to keep comfortable!
The Bed:
YUCK. There were cigarette holes in the bed spread and a few stains on the white sheets as well. The sheet itself appeared clean aside from the stains. Still, it didnt make you feel all clean and snuggly. The bed was THE most uncomfortable I have ever slept in and we have stayed in our share of hotels. We were happy to get home to our own bed as we didnt get a decent night sleep there either night.
The Bathroom:
Again, on the small side but otherwise ok. There was ample hot water which is a must for me. The pressure was a bit on the soft side though and when you first turned the water on the faucet made a loud creaky noise. They dont leave many towels and such in there. I had to call and have more brought up.
Amenities:
Umm, pretty much none. Ha. Well, they will hold your bags for you if you check in and the room is not ready. However, if you want them to hold your bags after check out time - they charge $1 per bag. I have never been charged that at another hotel. Usually if you plan on staying for a few hrs after check out, they hold your bags happily - free of charge. They also have a restaurant down in the lobby. However, it appeared to be closed for both lunch and dinner. They do offer a continental breakfast. On their website it says it is included with your room, but when I actually got there I was told it was $7/person. $7 for a bagel or roll and juice is a bit crazy if you ask me. There are ice machines and soda machines in this hotel - however, they are only located on certain floors. We stayed on the 9th floor and had to go down to the 7th floor to get ice and such. When I got there - the soda machine was broken and I had to continue to the 4th floor. Im sorry to say that there are no other amenities that I can think of offered there.
The Price:
I paid $130 each night which came to $160 after all of the state and city taxes were added. This is pretty good considering the Manhattan location. Most other hotels I looked into were way above $300 per night.
Checkout:
I was told when making the reservation that I would be able to have a guaranteed late check out of 2PM. (normally it is 12PM) However, the morning of departure the nasty lady downstairs informed me that there was no such thing as late check out and I would have to get my things out of the room by 12 due to the full hotel. She was un apologetic and did nothing to help me out with this matter.
Basically, the only good things I can say about this hotel are the location and price. The lobby is quite run down, Rooms are small and nothing to flaunt about, and the customer service is lacking a great deal.
I did just write a letter that I e mailed and also sent through regular postal mail to their customer relations dept. We will see if I get any response from this. If I do, I will write an update.
