| megansmommi's Full Review: Black & Decker 12" Automatic Feed Trimmer / Grass ... |
This trimmer has revolutionized my life. Heretofore I owned a Sears Craftsman trimmer with a cord feeder that constantly jammed. And trying to bump it to advance the feed was a joke...the guard always fell off. This has none of those problems. The feed on Black & Decker does just what it says...you never have to worry about line problems. I have used this trimmer a dozen times this season and it just whacks away at the grass no problem. Trimming around all the slats in my picket fence used to take an hour, what with all the line feed issues and all. Now I can do it in about 10 minutes.
I have the cordless version, which is somewhat top heavy because of the battery. But the charge lasts long enough to do my entire yard, which is small (1/4 acre) but is surrounded by a picket fence, and contains a large deck, a long shrub row, a rose garden, a small patio and a driveway that I have to trim around -- so the extra weight is well worth the trouble. Because the charge lasts so long, the recharging time is not an issue. After I do the entire yard, I pop it in the home base unit and it is ready for the next time. Particularly given the breadth of material I need to trim around, the lack of a cord truly makes the extra weight worth slightly tired arms.
I will say the battery is a little hard to remove -- you have to get a good grasp on both sides of the unit and work it off while pushing in two hard-to-push-in buttons. The span I have to keep my hands at is too great to get the leverage I need to remove the battery, so I have to get my husband to take it off. On the flip side, it is easy both to get the battery in and out of the charger and it is easy to get the battery ON the trimmer.
The starting buttons take a little getting used to (which is good, because it means my small children can't start it themselves). The start is the widespread "press down on trigger A while pushing forward on button B," but once you've got it started, you only need to hold the trigger down to keep it rolling.
The cord replacements are about $6 to $8 dollars, but my cord has lasted the entire season so far, and I have trimmed and edged about a dozen times. Since I'm constantly whacking into my fence (which I assume puts great stress on my cord), I'm amazed at the long life it has exhibited. I have yet to replace the cord, so I can't tell you if it is hard or easy.
All in all, a wonderful trimmer. I love working in my yard again!
