| naphtalia's Full Review: Black & Decker B2000 Bread Machine |
When I travelled to Israel, I was limited in what I could bring - two boxes, not to exceed 70 pounds each, plus two carry ons. That sounds like a lot, but not when you're carrying text books. Many of my favorite things from back in San Diego had to stay behind, and that included my Black and Decker Bread machine. Well, it just arrived with a friend who came in on El-Al, and I've already made a loaf. I am so happy, I can't wipe the grin off my face.
This is a really marvelous machine. It came with an instructional video, but once you start playing with the machine, you'll find what you enjoy doing with it most. It can make "basic" bread with a rapid bake feature in under two hours. I almost never avail myself of this, however, as I don't like this bread as well as the slower developing stuff.
It makes nice big loves - 2 pounds (900 grams) and bakes them horizontally. (I prefer horizontal bread, myself, except for Boston brown bread which is supposed to cook in a coffee can and come out round and tall.) It has 6 settings for basic bread, french, dough, grain and baking. You can also adjust for darker or lighter crust depending on your preference. (I love dark, crispy crusts.) The whole grain setting includes three rising cycles which is very important for the best possible results with heavier grains like rye.
There is a 13 hour programmable timer which is great. You can set everything up, go to sleep and wake up to fresh baked bread. (The one caveat here, the machine can be noisy during the mixing cycle, so if you're a light sleeper, you might not want this machine running next door to your bedroom.) The machine is very simple to program - much easier than a VCR. The keep warm feature will maintain the bread piping hot for about an hour after its done, so if you're slow getting up, you can still have hot bread.
The viewing window is very helpful as you don't have to open the whole mechanism up to see what is going on.
The only downside I see to this is that I'd lost a lot of weight since I've been away from this machine, and I'm afraid I might gain some of it back.
