| cwainwright's Full Review: Braun FlavorSelect KF 180 12-Cup Coffee Maker |
I’ll probably never own a Mercedes or BMW, but I’m intimate with the fetishistic devotion they inspire. You see, I’m on my third Braun automatic coffeemaker. And the second one wasn’t even broken.
Of course, the carafe lid was wearing a bit at the hinge. And sometimes, if I didn’t swing the filter mechanism exactly right, it wouldn’t lock perfectly into place. And…
Oh, why lie? Dings and dents notwithstanding, if ten-year-old unit #1 was any indication, this machine had another three to five years left in her. The truth is, I saw the gleaming white chassis of the new FlavorSelect KF 180 on display at Bed, Bath & Beyond and I was sunk. That small, elegant control panel! The clean “click” of the one-touch electronic buttons! The achingly sexy contours of the sleek, new carafe, its plastic trim winnowed down to the barest functional minimum!
Yes, it was on sale ($50 from a regular retail price of $60.) And yes, until the end of the year, Braun is offering an additional mail-in rebate of $10. Forty bucks is still a ridiculous sum to pay for a coffeemaker, even one with an automatic timer.
Still, it’s not quite as outrageously priced as its more expensive Braun brethren. It lacks the on-board water filter of the higher-end models, but I never use tap water and do a vinegar rinse every three months, so it’s not necessary. It also comes without the gold-plated filter of the KF 187, but I prefer the taste of coffee filtered through a fresh, paper filter. Other than that, the models are identical, including an adjustable automatic timer for the hot-plate element.
Besides, this isn’t just killer coffee we’re discussing; this is art. I will look at that gorgeous hunk of machinery on my kitchen counter and be turned on every morning for the next ten years.
Or until my next bout of replacement fever.
