Recently, I bought Sony 50-pack CD-R spindle and it is definitely a major improvement over some cheaper brands I used on the past in one area that counts for me CD-R playback in my Panasonic DVD player.
Although the previous CD-Rs played fine in my cars stereo, my portable CD player and could be read my both my computers CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives, my DVD player would occasionally stumble in the middle of the movie (XVCD format) or in the middle of an MP3 (225 kbps bit rate). This happened with discs from PNY and Memorex as well as with lesser known brands.
Performance
The display of how much better Sony media really is came last night. While trying to watch a movie, recorded previously on a lesser known media, the player started freezing once every 3 minutes or so. The disc was clean and cleaning the player with a cleaning disc did not help.
I powered up my computer and made a copy from the problematic disc to Sony in less than 10 minutes. With the new disc, there was not a single case of freezing. Another proof that most of the time you get what you pay for.
The current Sony CD-R discs carry speed ratings of at least 40x, so recording itself took less than 5 minutes (my CD-RW drive is rated at 48x). The discs are 700Mb and can fit 80 minutes of music or VCD movie. In XVCD mode, you can fit even more (with worse picture quality) or less (with better quality). I can fit about 10 CDs in one disc in MP3 more at 225 kbps, substantially more at the, more widespread, 128 kbps or 160 kbps.
The packaging preserved discs well in transit and is easy to open/close. The disc surface is well-suited for writing with CD markers.
Bottom Line
If you want reliable performance and compatibility with more devices, the Sony CD-R media is highly recommended.
