Pros: Cheap media, USB connection, Ability to record.
Cons: Software is a horrible. Very slow transfers on slow PCs.
The Bottom Line: This is NOT an mp3 player and you will be dissapointed if you think it can act as one. Buy it only for what it is, a mindisc player/recorder.

| coolwave's Full Review: Sony Net MD Walkman MZ-N707 Personal MiniDisc Play... |
I was in the market for a new mp3 player and I had also considered a minidisc player as an option even before NetMD players were released.
Well, as soon as I heard about NetMD I just had to have one of these players. All the claims were so awesome I picked up this unit as soon as I could find it.
PROS TO MINIDISC PLAYERS:
If you are considering purchasing a minidisc player, you likely know the advantages of minidiscs such as almost unlimited storage, just carry around more minidiscs which are very affordable. Recording. If you have a use for the recording, then a minidisc player is right for you. The recording features are excellent.
WHY I AM GOING TO BUY AN MP3 PLAYER INSTEAD:
To make this review short, I just want to say that I'm currently selling this player on Ebay and I want you to know why. This thing is a huge hassle to use! Transfering mp3s to minidiscs is a very annoying process. First you have to import the mp3s into the software, then they have to be converted to the minidisc ATRAC format before they can be transfered. Transfering the music can take a super long time if you don't have a fast computer. I have a dual Athlon 1800+ system (yea, yea, I'm a geek) so this is not a problem for me, but I've read many people's posts on message boards saying that the conversion of mp3s to ATRAC takes forever. Another problem with the software is the Checkouts. You can only "Check Out" a single song 3 times before you have to "Check it in" to use it again. While this isn't a huge problem, no mp3 player requires this (except Sony's)!
New mp3 players are getting easier and easier to use and faster to tranfer mp3s. Now all you do is hook up your new speedy USB 2.0 connection and drag and drop mp3s or any files to your player and all is well. Of course you can do it in more complex ways too with playlists and folders and all that. New mp3 players are always being released and the market is very competitive. Mindisc players are useful for some, but not for this guy.
