I dont know about you but during the winter months, I like to keep warm in bed. Blankets just dont do it for me simply because I need tons of them and I cannot tolerate all that weight when I am sleeping. Regular comforters keep me warm to an extent but there is nothing like a down comforter to snuggle up in bed with on a cold winter night.
At Christmas, there was a huge sale on at Kohls Department Store and when I saw that Blue Ridge Goose Down Comforters were on sale for $49.00, any size, I jumped at the chance of a good bargain and bought one for me and one for my daughter.
The product:
I bought one full/queen: 86 x 86 inches and one king: 102 x 86 inches. Even though I have a queen size bed, I personally find that the king fits better in size, likewise the queen fits my daughters full size bed better.
Both the Queen and the king-size covers are made of 100 percent white, 240 thread count cotton. The queen contains 25 oz white goose down and the king contains 29oz white goose down. This is all box-stitched end to end with a 10 inch box stitch. They both have double-edged stitching which provides a nice accent.
My Experience:
I was really pleased that I got such a good deal on these comforters which are normally around $90.00. However, they only came in white so unless your house is surgically clean, I would suggest the purchase of a Duvet cover. I personally like the white but have since found out that it costs around $25.00 here to have a down comforter dry-cleaned. Keeping them white is a problem because of this. I have tried the home dry cleaner products but all they do is freshen them with a flowery scent. I am on the look-out for duvets myself now.
As far as performance, I love my comforter. It is light considering it is filled with down and even when it is cold, the material is not cold to the touch. Therefore, warm up is quick and even and it stays that way all night. I move a lot from one side of the bed to the other and it warms practically instantly wherever I move. It certainly doesnt wake me up.
Now, where I live in Texas, it rarely plummets below 30 degrees but I think this comforter would suit the coldest weather as it keeps the heat firmly locked around you. I wouldnt use this comforter in the summer here. Obviously, it is too hot but it is perfect for those chilly winter months.
Conclusion:
I think these comforters are well-made with perfectly distributed down. The only problem I have is with the expense of dry cleaning. Because they are made with down, they do get a certain odor after a while, so cleaning regularly is important. In fact, I like to hang mine outside once a week just to air them out. Which reminds me, when you first purchase these comforters, they have been sealed in a plastic carrier and have a certain odor to them when you open them up. Don't let it put you off. Just hang them outside in the fresh air for a while and it will diminish.
Overall, I think I got a good deal on my Blue Ridge Goose Down Comforters. My daughter and I keep warm in the winter months. I would recommend them to anyone who has a case of cold feet. They will really keep you toasty warm.
