I was so excited to see Harlan Coben’s newest novel on the shelf of my library! Long Lost is another Myron Bolitar novel and it was published in April, 2009. Once again, I am not disappointed.
THE STORY
To date, Myron Bolitar is in a committed relationship with a 9/11 widow and struggling with its fruitfulness. He gets dumped by her and, timing is everything as they say, his phone rings and it is his long lost love-fling, Terese. Terese is a former CNN anchor who stole Myron’s heart while on a whirlwind months-long “vacation from life” together. Then she suddenly takes off, leaving Myron to get over her and move on with his life.
Ten years go by and Terese needs his help. She wants him to drop everything and head to Paris and he reluctantly goes, partly for his piqued interest and recent dumping and partly for the trouble he got into with a coach and a beating. Myron basically flees the country and decides to help Terese anyway he can.
Of course, as soon as he sees Terese, his deep feelings are unleashed and they reunite as if no time has passed. She clues him in on what her situation is and he stops at nothing to help her. It seems her ex-husband is murdered and right before he is killed, he calls her to tell her that he must speak to her and tell her some earth shattering news. Since dead men don’t speak, they try to figure out things on their own. Things start to go askew when the couple are detained by police and are followed, assaulted, shot at, threatened, and even kidnapped. All of this happens and they still continue to try to find out what the ex-husband wanted to share.
Twisting plotlines abound and Rick (the ex) being a top notch reporter uncovered a horrific, radical, terrorism based business that had a direct effect on both Rick’s and Terese’s lives. Now Myron and Terese, with the help of Myron’s best friend Win and his office staff (Esperanza and Big Cyndi), have to uncover the mystery themselves.
Myron faces challenges with almost every type of international crime fighting units out there! And he survives! And, not to give anything away, but basically everyone dies BUT Myron! OK, not everyone but there is a LOT of killing and torture, which makes for very exciting reading.
MY THOUGHTS
My opinion of Myron Bolitar as a character has changed dramatically in Long Lost. I felt that he was more fun to read many novels ago and that now he is a bit less whimsical and a bit less edgy than he once was. He, by no means, plays it safe but his witticism and charm feel below par and his drive and passion seem waned. His interest in his very own organization, MBReps, takes a huge backseat here and while it is mentioned, it is only to close the reader’s mind off to it so that we can continue to play along with Myron’s international journey. And Esperanza, his partner, has become almost muted in personality and charisma! The story chalks it up to her becoming a mother, but I chalk it up to the author dimming her lights in this tale.
And lastly, Win…. Nothing changes here and nothing ever will. His monetary resources are endless and his contacts and relationships are boundless. He knows someone everywhere and always gets what he needs and what he wants. He is always at Myron’s side. Lucky for Myron or Myron would be dead.
I liked Long Lost very much even though I voiced criticism over the ancillary characters. The story was exciting and yet NOT so completely far-fetched that it could not actually happen. Radical extremists go to radical extremes to pursue their goals. Long Lost might not be so off base.
Another GREAT summer read even though we are closing in on fall. A quick weekend relaxer… to be read while drinking a Yoo Hoo.
