Jenny McCarthy is Batsh*t Crazy (Reply to this comment)

Ugh. I'd rather have Holly Robinson Peete make a big deal late than have Jenny McCarthy talk AT ALL. She is all over the map and I'd be willing to be in another few years she'll have yet another story.

NOW she's aligned with DAN. Before she was aligned with the whole "Indigo" thing where her son was a "highly evolved life form" sent here "with a message." Oh, and what was helping him communicate? Sun exposure... sunscreen was BAD! Of course, since she started this book, she took down her Indigo Mom site, but you can find links everywhere.

Believe me, I understand trying everything under the sun. What I don't understand is her proselytizing every time she jumps on a new bandwagon. Is it for the PR?

I watched the view, good morning america and 20/20. I missed Larry King since our power went out in our development and so the DVR didn't record that or my other shows on at the same time :(

Thanks for the link!

When we get back from Disney I need to check out that cafemom place. I'll have to let you know how disney with autism goes as well!!! I'm high hopeful about it.

There are a few things really bugging me about this Jenny McArthy story. 1) it seems like she has said different things on different shows and in her book presenting different hues of her opinion on vaccines etc.

Don't you 'love' how they mention that she did ABA and speech etc but then zoom right over to the biomedical answers as being almost more important?

Are you doing GFCF at all now? We have tried and it didn't really work in the past. We're trying again now with better acceptance of the foods but I've not noticed a difference and I'm worried because he does seem a bit lethargic so I know I need to find a way to get vitamins and stuff into him... SO CHALLENGING.

I'd love to read about how homeschooling is going!

Not sure if you see any more outside traffic, but I did include this link in my Oprah article on my site under the book.

I taped The View since homeschooling and did not want to get distracted. I watched tape later and thought it sucked. There was no organization and they just babbled randomly with no thought process.

Watched Larry King during the live show here on West coast and taped it at 6 pm. Nick asks this question -

What did she mean "fight to save son", is he gonna die or something?

How do you answer that to a 12 year old on the spectrum? I am very busy over at cafemom. Check it out but if you join I signed up as an affiliate through my site and get $ for each one, so check out my article on connecting with other parents at my site to get the link.

I should probably do an article on homeschooling now that I am doing it and I never thought this would be something I would do. It is very visual with the work on computer and then knowing how your child is doing right away. I use the Virtual Academy with k12.com

my husband brought me home the magazine also (PEOPLE) and its like a book summary.. so much is reprinted right from the book and then summarized. Bummer! I was hoping for something new!! I told a couple of my friends to just spend the few bucks on the magazine and skip the $20 book - since they'd pretty much learn the same thing!!!

Great review, Mary! :)

I just bought this, and have been hanging on to every word! Her story is so much like mine it is scary! We have had so many leaps and bounds with Caleb that all we have is hope and this book finally gave me that extra push to get in gear!

I haven't finished reading all of it yet, but I bounced back and forth between, and have been doing research at TACA and Generation Rescue since! I also bought the People magazine, which seems to have the same thing the book does, and I read an article about Jim Carrey that seems to have it word forword in the People article (so basically, bought the magazine and read nothing new), but I am mostly glad this is getting so much publicity in the mainstream!

I will be following suit shortly, after I am done reading! :D thanks for drawing attention to it! :D

Bonnie,
You should read it.. its a quick read. I'm sure you won't learn anything "new" in it. I really didn't. She talks about GFCF and using probiotics and other supplements to get all the yeast out. Its a gentler version of the Fighting For Tony book where in the end the child is cured from a special diet.

Ugh Mary! I hear ya. It can be so draining sometimes!!! This book was definitely refreshing from some of the more heavy handed stuff I've read lately. I didn't really learn anything "new" in it but I found it interesting that someone dared to speak about some of the biomedical options which for quite a while now I've felt have always been swept under the rug. Interestingly enough when my son was diagnosed 5 years ago one of the first things that I came across was GFCF and some of these things Jenny did - its not anything new!!!!

I am about to read Dr. Jepson's book, plus I have a few new ones from the Topics of autism series.

When they showed the clip on Oprah of her son I could tell he was on the spectrum immediately. TACA is very big here in Southern CA, but not very close to me. Although they started up a Los Angeles support group and I would need respite to attend. The guy who runs it is the one Jenny mentions in her answers on the Oprah board about seeing his video at the USAAA presentation. I would go to the DAN Conference if I had respite. Maybe one of these years, but the traffic in Los Angeles makes it hard to get to these functions.

I missed the first hour on 20/20 but read about it since I am now active on CafeMom.com in the numerous autism groups.

There were many books on the market when her son was diagnosed and she made it seem like there was nothing out there. What about all those books we have reviewed of Moms doing it in the 70s and 80s?

Anyway Larry King does not do any prep for his interviews and I am wondering how that will go. Interesting that he is very old and has two young boys, no dx there so that shuts down the theory on older fathers.

I dont like that Holly Robinson Peete waited so many years to come out in public, like now that Autism Speaks has made it the IN thing to talk about, she comes on and says she is one of us too.

I hate that Autism Society of America gets no advertisement. On Oprah's site it mentions Autism Speaks. ASA has been around for 40 years and these other orgs are pushing them out the door.

Is it worth me getting this book, you think? Well I can do a review on my site and get some amazon $ thru it, so better get it soon.

OK, so I am still reading books and books and more books about the subject ... but this sounds like one that I need to add to my list. You know how I feel about Alex and we both know all the hoops that you have had to jump through over the years. Anyone that dismisses anything that's written in this book is a complete moron. No true hard can come from trying something that's non-invasive but I would assume that you have to have some common sense in order go through some of the things that are in the book.

... about this book. I'm glad it was a refreshing change of pace. After 3 books on SPD, I'm taking a break from it for a while.
