sarahgutch's Full Review: Ruth Yaron - Super Baby Food
I was pregnant with my third child when I was introduced to Super Baby Food by my friend Denise (who wrote the longest note to Ruth as part of the Forward to the Second Edition). Denise raved so much about all the information found in the book, I started to feel like I was going to miss something special if I didn't read it!
I ordered it directly from the publisher and very quickly found that it was information that wasn't totally foreign to me. As a subscriber to Prevention magazine, I try to keep up with healthy foods and ways of preparing them. When my first two children were born (13 and 17 years before) I had collected baby feeding recommendations various publications, but so many years (and moves) later, I no longer had them on my bookshelf: LLL's Womanly Art; Vicky Lansky's Feed Me! I'm Yours; Dr. Burton White's The First Three Years; several cookbooks from Rodale Press.
The best thing about this book is that Ruth Yaron has collected all this information and more... and there it is, in one handy book. It's very well organized and contains information on all kinds of somewhat related subjects like what to look for in a high chair, how to make your own craft items like modeling clay and bubbles, and lots of ways to save on household cleaning products (including the same recipe for window cleaner my mom taught me).
Just before my baby was ready to start solids I brought the book to her pediatrician, who looked over the Schedule of Food Introduction for the First Year. She said it looked like a good plan.
Did I follow the book's recommendations to the letter? Absolutely not! For one thing, we are not vegetarian, so at the appropriate time as recommended by my baby's doctor, we added meat. The other thing, is that I would not push my baby to eat something she just doesn't like. I tried the brown-rice super porridge, which she ate a little, but she preferred the commercial cereals, so we stuck with them.
All the detailed information provided everything you would ever want to know on how to prepare and store fruits and vegetables, and once we got started we found that it's much easier and less time-consuming than you'd think. Actually, it has always been a mystery why anyone would purchase pureed banana in a jar when all you have to do is cut a 1 inch length of banana, mash it with the back of your fork, and feed it to your baby!
I am the type of cook who will make "from scratch" within reason. I love home-baked bread and pizza, and always have on hand pancake and biscuit mixes I've made myself. On the other hand, making my own fruit leather and yogurt? I've done it in the past, but, Stoneyfield Farm makes such a lovely whole milk yogurt, and I'm not sure all the effort with the fruit leather would be appreciated.
My baby is now 2 and I still keep Super Baby Food handy in my kitchen, simply because it is full of great time-saving tips and ideas. The chapter titled Specific Fruits and Vegetables is very handy, as well as the many charts (like Protein Complementarity) and recipes for household products.
I recommend this book to anyone (not just expectant parents) because of the wealth of useful information.
