I first encountered this game at our family's Thanksgiving gathering last year. All my cousins were in a huddle, overwhelmingly excited about this obnoxious sounding game. After they played, over and over again, I finally sat down with them and gave it a whirl.
Once I tried it for myself, I too was hooked. In classic Simon style, the player is drawn into concentration mode trying to stay on top of the announcer's commands. With two different modes (one vocal, and one with correlating sounds) there are endless possibilities playing this game. In the vocal mode, a voice tells you what it is you are supposed to do (whether that is to pull on the tab, flick the zig-zagged line, spin the wheel, bop the middle, or twist the knob). In the sounds version, you have to learn what sound goes with each action... this is more difficult, as you might imagine, yet wonderfully challenging.
You can also choose to play solo, or as a group. When playing solo, you can go towards a high score by maintaining the rhythm and accuracy of the commands longer and longer than before (the game will tell you how many points you've gotten when you finish). When playing as a group, and added command is to "pass it", where you hand the game over to the next player. Play progresses until someone messes up, at which time (like in spoons, or musical chairs) that players is out of the game... until one person is left as the winner.
We played this game as an entire family, from 8 to 68 year olds and I can assure you that play was very equal. To put a twist on the game, after a while we made ourselves hold it opposite how we'd come accustomed to.
My biggest gripe with this game, as mentioned at first, is that if you are not included in the play it can be annoyingly loud. When I played alone, I tried to avoid this by muffing the sound area... but it interfered a bit with my reaction time.
All in all I think this game is a great mover and shaker for any age group or party. It's always fun to get a group of people together who think it's an easy game to play, once they step in and try, they can understand the complexity!
