It is school supply gathering time again, and this year, we entrusted the help of our Boston Nautilus pencil sharpener. Together, my children needed a total of thirty-six sharpened pencils to begin school with, and that does not included the colored pencils, but thankfully those came pre-sharpened.
The Boston Nautilus pencil sharpener is a sleek blue and black model, measuring about six inches long, two and a half inches deep and four inches tall. It operates on four "AA" batteries, which are not included, but are easily installed without the need for a screwdriver. We have used our sharpener for about six months and have not had to change the batteries yet.
According to the manufacturer's website, www.hunt-corp.com, this sharpener uses "long-lasting precision X-ACTO® steel spiral cutters" and the pencils we sharpened today are just as good as those done when this sharpener was first purchased.
The slim size makes it easy to keep on your desk, and it can be useful as a bookend, provided the books are not extremely tall or heavy. The hole where you insert the pencil is on the top of the sharpener, so that no side needs to be exposed if you are short of deskspace.
The receptacle for catching the shavings is permanently attached to the main portion of the sharpener and swings down for emptying. My children cannot figure out (and I have not shown them) that they need to squeeze both sides of the receptacle at the points indicated by indentations in order to easily pull it down. If by some chance they do figure this out, I feel secure knowing that the machine will not operate unless the receptacle is properly snapped back into place. The receptacle seems to hold a generous amount of shavings, since I only had to empty it once during the massive pencil sharpening event we had, and there were some shavings in it before we started.
For some reason, my children's school has a policy disallowing pencil sharpeners of any kind in class, including the little plastic ones. What this means, is that every few weeks, each child is sent home with a plastic bag of their pencils for re-sharpening. On one such day last school year, both of my children came home with pencils on the same day, and we burned out the motor on our previous, cheaper, battery operated sharpener. That sharpener cost about $7 and when I went looking for a new one, I chose this one for about $20, figuring that it would be a higher quality. We have used it with no problems for about six months, and after just completing the sharpening of three dozen pencils, with no burned out motor smell or overheating of this Boston Nautilus sharpener has definitely met our needs.
All electric or battery operated pencil sharpeners will make some noise, due to the motor running, but this one does not seem to be too loud. In fact, we used it in the same room while others were watching television and did not hear any complaints, nor did the volume of the television need to be raised.
We have been pleased with the purchase of our Boston Nautilus Battery-Operated Pencil Sharpener. It is cordless so it is easy to move from room to room as necessary and it is as child-safe as a pencil sharpener can get. After having the summer off, I anticipate this sharpener being used almost daily now that school is about to begin. Most people do not need to sharpen thirty-six pencils at a time, but it is nice to know that this sharpener can do the job if necessary.
