I thought the days of diaper rash were gone when my son finally got potty trained but once again.. Mom was wrong. A few months back my son got a very irritated rash like none other that he'd had before. Of course, having just moved I had no clue where the trusty tube of Desitin was or even if we still owned a tube of it. So, the next time I was out at the stores I planned on picking some up. While out at a local Target, I saw something new on the shelf next to the Balmex, Desitin, and A & D ointments - it was this Boudreaux's Butt Paste. And though it was a bit on the pricey side (a 2 oz tube was over $5), with a name like butt paste I just had to give it a try.
About Boudreaux's Butt Paste
As mentioned above, this diaper ointment is definitely a bit on the pricey side of things. However, if it works and works quickly then no price is too high. The tube I purchased was a 2 oz size and I've had it for a few months with plenty of product left. Granted, my son has not had a ton of rashes in this time so its not used frequently. The product is available in multiple sizes/variations including sample/travel size foil packets, 1, 2 or 4 oz tubes, and even a 1 lb. tub.
Up until recently I'd only heard about this product but never seen it on local shelves. However, as of more recent months this creme can be found in my local grocery stores as well as Target and Wal-Mart. If you can't find it locally it can also be purchased at the manufacturer's website at www.buttpaste.com along with a whole host of other branded goods including T-shirts, caps, and more. I personally wouldn't make a habit of wearing any of these items - but hey, maybe someone you know has just that certain sense of humor needed in order to pull it off.
The manufacturer makes the following claims about the product (on the packaging and at their website):
-Goes on and cleans off easily
-Treats and protects
-Pleasant scent

Our Experience with Boudreaux's Butt Paste
One of the things that I don't really care for in some other diaper ointments is the stinky fish oil smell that they have. I'm really glad to tell you that this Butt Paste doesn't smell like dead fish. Now, its not all roses either, but to me the smell is not offensive - which is a good thing. The product itself is a pale tan color with a very thick paste/ointment like consistency. As I squeezed it out of the tube those first few times I thought "yuck", but the true test would be to see if it worked.
My son laughed wildly when I smeared some of this stuff all over his rash, so I took that as a good sign. Previously he'd been rather whiney since his butt hurt - hey, can you blame him? If you rub the product in it will eventually all be absorbed but when I use this I tend to be on the generous side in applying it and don't rub it in all the way - in hopes that it may form a protective barrier. This method has worked well for us, and I've found that any rashes treated with this butt paste tend to clear up substantially after a single application and are usually gone by the 2nd or third go round. No more rashes, lasting for days - which is a very good thing.
One thing that I really think bears mentioning about Boudreaux's butt paste is that it will stain clothing if any gets onto it. Since my son is potty trained we're using this inside of cotton underpants, not disposable diapers. I didn't even consider the fact that it might stain and was surprised when it happened the first time. So, the same would go if you were using cloth diapers - I imagine. Even after laundering they look rather, um - poopy like. Consider that a lesson that I learned.
Overall
I really do recommend Boudreaux's Butt Paste. I'd previously prefered to use the Desitin line of products but this stuff works way better and is worth paying a bit more. Plus, I just love the name!
