mrmazda's Full Review: Richard Beauchamp - Boxers for Dummies
I've had two full-blooded Boxers in the past so I'm accustomed to how they act, etc. but I decided I wanted to get one again from a Boxer Rescue shelter so I wanted to read up more on Boxers, especially those that are a little older. I've read through tons of books, but I have to say this was the simplest, most effective book I have read.
The beginning of the book lays it out, here's the questions and the facts, if you can't handle them, you do not need to get a Boxer. They ask many straight forward closed ended questions and if you answer no, you need to consider it. They asked several questions about your available time, energy, feeding schedules, etc. Things that you might not always think about.
The book goes on to discuss the history of the Boxers, why they exist, etc. Not boring at all and extremely informative. I learned a lot about the history and it's only a few pages, non-history buffs can make their way though it. They detail AKC registration of the breed, markings and other interesting facts specifically about Boxers.
The book then hits the main targets, feeding, training, obedience school, interaction with new people and children as separate chapters. Each chapter is not long and is packed with bullets and information that you can use in your raising of a Boxer. I learned alot about housebreaking through crate training, which is something I have not done before. It also gives you the honest truth about life expectancy of Boxers (usually 6-10 years) :-(
The author is very factual and straightforward. The author does not tout Boxers as the best dog in the world, but he gives you the knowledge to know whether this type of breed is what you are looking for or if you need to consider picking another breed. The book has definitely given me additional insight into the breed that I wasn't aware of and didn't have experience with since each Boxer is different.
