| ender43's Full Review: Breads of India |
Breads of India is one of my favorite Indian restaurants. The menu changes daily, featuring tastes from all over India, and with a tandoori chicken, another chicken, a lamb, 2 veggie dishes, a special (usually seafood), and maybe something else. Plus at least 5 types of bread, including naan, roomaal, kulchas and others. Please forgive any spelling errors. A secret that many people don't know about (at least I don't think they do) is that you can get a combination plate. I always choose tandoori chicken, and then either the lamb or a veggie dish as the second item. It only costs about $3 more, plus you get a full serving of tandoori chicken, and a half serving of something else. Very worth it.
I have said tandoori chicken 3 times so far, and the reason why is because it is delicious. No other tandoori chicken can compare, as far as I have tried. One advantage is that Breads of India uses free-range chicken, and this makes a big difference. Combine this with terrific spices and a tandoori oven, and you have a winner, hands down.
You get rice and salad with your meal, but you must pick out some breads. I recommend one bread per person. Breads of India has their recommended bread that complements each dish, and each has gone great so far. The breads are delicious, and different each time, whether its stuffed, baked with spices and onions, or plain made with wheat.
Every dish is incredibly flavorful, with an intricate blend of spices. The menu describes each in detail, including the origin of the dish, the spices and how it is prepared. Everything is pretty spicy, but nothing too spicy. A great way to cool your tongue is with a tall glass of mango juice.
The service is average, about what you can expect from anywhere else. The place is tiny, and gets packed quickly. When you arrive, quickly write your name on the waiting list outside the door, and hope for the best. It is not uncommon for you to sit right next to, or at the same table as other people. You can sometimes wait up to 45 minutes. Get there early, and sign up quick. The decor is nice, but pretty sparse. With two drinks and two combination plates the bill comes out to just over $30.
THE BOTTOM LINE: A "hole-in-the-wall" place featuring fantastic Indian food. The tandoori chicken is a must try, and since the menu changes every night, you can get a different flavored tandoori each time you visit. Plus, Breads of India is opening another restaurant (2 blocks from my apartment), so there is no excuse not to go.
