This review is one in an ongoing series where I seek out The Best Burger in San Francisco. The first review, of Hamburger Mary's, is here:

This quest began as a challenge to a friend, wherein I had insisted that Burger Joint offered the best patty, and he insisted Hamburger Mary's.
Well, I may have been sorely mistaken. My claim about Burger Joint had been based on a single meal, where I had been blown away by the delightfully juicy and spicy quality of the burger. Upon returning for my 'official' tasting, however, my heart sank as I bit into my order.
As with the previous tasting, this review covers the quality of three items: hamburger (medium-rare, no cheese or anything); fries; black and white malt.
HAMBURGER
This time around my medium-rare burger was overcooked and thin. The succulence I had remembered, the blood dripping from the meat, the juices spreading throughout the mouth--all that was gone. The patty was dry and the meat's flavor was underwhelming. BJ does apply some amazing spice combination to provide a delightful tangy taste I'd never before had on a burger.
I was surprised by the difference between this burger and my previous meal here, which leads me to wonder how hit-or-miss BJ is. I mean, this time around, the burger wasn't bad; it just didn't match the heavenliness I had expected.
Rating: 6.5
FRIES
Perhaps the best in San Francisco. Reminiscent of Belgian-style fries, BJ's potatoes are crispy crunchy outside, soft and fluffy inside. Not at all chewy--biting into a fry will cause it to melt in your mouth. All you need to do is add a dash of salt.
RATING: 9
BLACK AND WHITE MALT
Not the full-bodied flavor sensation of Hamburger Mary's heavenly confection, but still a good upstanding ice cream treat. Would benefit from a tad more chocolate sauce and malt in the mix.
