| martytdx's Full Review: Burt's Bees Lemon Grass Insect Lotion |
When my wife and I planned our wedding/honeymoon in Fiji, we understood some things were to be expected - no TV, a long flight and that we would encounter bugs (if you go to the South Pacific, they grow 'em big). But we weren't worried, and brought some repellents with us as protection.
When we got to the first island, though, we discovered what the resort suggested - Burt's Bees Lemon Grass Insect Lotion. Imagine our surprise when we found out that it was from the good old U.S.! But when in Fiji...
Well, they were right. As well as Tropical Scent Off! and Avon Skin So Soft were, the Burt's did the best job at keeping the creepy crawlies off of our skin for the entire trip. As a bonus, it did it without making us smell like a chemical factory - so we were able to mingle with the others without fear.
All of Burt's products are made from natural ingredients - in the case of this product (now called Burt's Bees Herbal Insect Repellent by the way), that is Lemongrass (3.2%), Citronella (.40%) and Rosemary Oils (.40%), mixed with Grape Seed Oil and Vitamin E. That's it - simple, natural ingredients.
The pump bottle we had was a small 4-oz. version, and offered a slightly oily liquid (hmm, go figure) which spread easily over the entire skin and was quickly absorbed or dried, leaving the skin dry and soft to the touch. Better yet, the distinct scent is gave was a mixture of citrus and spice - like a spicy lemon - and it's a lot nicer to sit next to your new wife when she doesn't smell like DEET.
But the smell and texture are only half of the story - did it work? Splendidly. Yes, we still had our share of mosquito bites, but 99% of them were on untreated areas (who thought to put bug repellent between the toes?) or after we'd been outside for a while. We found that for the first 2-3 hours after every application, we were good to go - sending the biting bugs looking for other victims.
Burt's Bees is a little expensive ($7.50 or more for 4 ounces), but I have to say that it worked wonders. We used it liberally and that 4 ounces went a long way to keeping us a happy couple. We have since bought more here, and now it's a staple for our summertime nights. Now, if we can just do something about that swarm of cicadas outside the window...
