| rag47's Full Review: Cafe Campagne |
I've always wanted to try Cafe Campagne and now I'm sorry we did. This is a French restaurant in two parts: upstairs is the formal dining room and downstairs the more casual cafe, which we dined at.
My wife is a vegetarian. Usually when we go to a fancy restaurant, they have at least one vegetarian entree, but not here. There was one vegetarian appetizer and she ordered that, plus a green salad. She asked if a hard-boiled egg could be crumpled on her salad, just to get a little protein (they already had this ingredient as it appears on another salad). Word comes back from the kitchen - no, we can't do that. Then her appetizer arrived, dripping in some kind of oil, so it's a billion calories. You take what you can get here, as a vegetarian.
So you see the customer is not always right, at least not here. They are not here to please you. They have their exalted cuisine which you are here to admire and no suggestions from the peanut gallery are appreciated. We've eaten at bistros and restos in Paris and other parts of France without encountering this attitude.
I and our other dinner companions are not vegetarians, and the food we got was very well prepared and tasty, all around. The service was curt at best; they made us feel very small here. Then the fat check arrived. Needless to say, we won't be back.
