| kungfulu2's Full Review: Callaway Biggest Big Bertha Driver |
The original Big Bertha woods were small (in comparison to today’s oversized woods), the Great Big Bertha Woods were big, but the Biggest Big Bertha Woods (BBB)are just too big, for many reasons. Is it because it provides more forgiveness? Distance? Comfort? Or maybe it’s because the clubs give the average golfer more confidence when approaching the tee.
Don’t think that due to the great head size you’ll be able to hit the ball a lot farther than the Great Big Berthas, that’s not what the club is made for. The club design is to provide great forgiveness and a lower, more piercing trajectory. The head is very light for its size, making the club relatively easy to swing. The head size is actually more traditional in design than the previous Berthas, and makes addressing the ball quite easy. When the club initially came out there were many reports that the graphite shafts were not strong, and were actually prone to snapping. This may have been true, but the shafts are actually very strong and are perfect for the club.
When I first saw the BBB I was a little intimidated by the large head, assuming that it would be too hard to control. What I found, however, was that the large head felt the same as other oversized drivers, and gave me a little more confidence from the tee. You’ve obviously got to tee the ball up a little higher than usual, which may add to any slice that a player may have. The ball has a relatively high trajectory, but carries very far. Unfortunately, you can’t expect to get a great release after the ball hits the fairway. The extra long, light graphite shaft (1/2” longer and 13% lighter than Great Big Bertha) complements the 290cc-club head.
The club’s advanced internal perimeter-weighting system provides the ultimate in forgiveness for more consistent ball striking. Also, Callaway's S2H2 (Short Straight Hollow Hosel) design takes weight from the hosel where it is useless and transfers it to the hitting area, where it can help you hit the ball harder without swinging harder. Added together, these features are the reason The BBB is directed towards higher handicappers who need as much help as possible off the tee. Unfortunately, the club is not available as a three wood, for it would be ideal for less advanced players who need an accurate club off the tee.
These days, it is common to find the club on sale at your local pro shop. If you find the club at its regular price of $379.99, you might opt for the new Hawkeye Driver that is more forgiving and has a smaller head. At $250, the Biggest Big Bertha is a great piece of equipment for any golfer looking for consistency off the tee.
