My old MAG Innoscan scanner was bulky, slow to warm up and slow to scan unit. I decided to get a newer scanner so I went with Canon N670U, which is slim (1.4), inexpensive and looks nice.
USB
The N670U is a USB model that doesnt even need AC power cord the scanner gets power from your computer via a USB port along with the controlling signals. The special USB cable is included and the manual says that you shouldnt use any cable other than the supplied one and you shouldnt try to use this cable with outer peripherals.
This is not cool the USB is supposed to be universal, right? Well, at least the cable is supplied.
Design
The scanner is very slim and can be operated either in conventional horizontal position, or vertically, using the supplied stand and a Vecro patch attached to the scanners lid. I doubt that the vertical position is of any convenience for scanning and not planning on using it.
The scanner has three buttons on its front that can be programmed using the supplied software. The defaults are for scan, copy and email.
Z-Lid
The so-called Z-Lid allows you scan large objects (books, etc) and uses the specially-hinged lid. Which is cool. Since the OCR (optical character recognition) software is included, it is quite easy to scan books and then include quotes in whatever you write.
Some Specs
The scanner features 600x1,200 dpi resolution, 48-bit internal color. The scan picture quality is excellent. It is also faster than my old MAG (hey, anybody wants to buy it?) and doesnt take so much time to warm up.
The supplied software is quite useful I find the supplied OCR (Caere) very accurate.
The supplied software/driver allows you remove dust/small scratches from the image while scanning as well as correct colors and do other adjustments (in the Expert mode).
The scanner requires Windows 98/ME/2000 or XP, Mac OS 8.6-9.X, OS X (classic mode only).
Picture Quality
The picture quality is excellent. I am very impressed with this model in terms of picture quality, especially for scanning color documents.
Speed
The scanner scans in B&W quite fast, but the scanning in color takes a while. I recently scanned some documents at "Documents (color) setting at 150 dpi. The scan of passport's 2 adjacent pages took 55 seconds.
Bottom Line
The Canon N670U makes me happy. It is slim, nice-looking, doesnt need separate power supply or cable and scans very well.
