I have seen a lot of GL1 and GL2 users who are forcing the cassette basket on their cameras. When it displays error codes like yours, they immediately go on the Internet and say, "Hey, I had the same problem!" Wrong! That is like if your chest hurts and you read about the symptom on the Internet it does NOT mean you are having a heart attack!

Like the poster said below me, you could be using bad tapes. There are a lot of poor tapes out there. I won't mention names but a few years ago it was common knowledge a manufacturer was putting too much oil/grease on the tape to make it easier to feed into the cassette during manufacturer. This caused a lot of head clogs for which a lot of camcorder manufacturers took the blame.

Did you use a dry video head cleaner to clean your reording heads? When I sold camcorders, I told the purchaser to fast forward and rewind ALL new tapes in your camcorder before you use them to prevent head clogs.

Undue 1 star (Reply to this comment)

First off, it is really unfortunate that the camera didn't work out for you- for that much money, it SHOULD work, at the very least.

But this is an unwarranted one star, and this problem often occurs with people that don't know how to take care of the camera, which isn't to say this is the case here, but this is what NEEDS to happen when you use this camera:

when you upgrade to a pro-consumer type of camera, there is unfortunately a level of pro-consumer care that needs to go along with it:

**Tape head cleaning and loyalty to one brand of tape**

You absolutely CANNOT switch tape brands to the cheapest ones around. DV tapes are known to have different lubricants among the tape makers- some use dry lubricant to move the tape through the machine, while others use wet lubricant. Mixing of these lubricants will result in a clog.

for instance:
If a person switches constantly between, for instance, JVC and Panasonic tapes, you will run into a head clog, guaranteed.

And this is the common link between the threads the reviewer provided. THIS ISN'T A DEFECT, it is simply a third-party problem. When you buy a Ferrarri but switch back and forth on different octane fuels based on price, you can't blame ferrari for the lower performance ( a weak analogy, yes).

you also cannot leave tapes in the camcorder for an extended period of time. This is just a rule of thumb that prevents a lot of headache.

I just want people to know that this is, as the review said, a great camera that takes great pictures. These puppies just need a little bit more of love and care than a hi-8, as much of a hassle as that is.

Most people don't know about these things, and that's why I'm providing it here.

For me, it should get a zero. A $2000 camera that dies in a year is unsatisfactory. I could rent one for less.

Although I agree with your complaint, I don't think it's fair that you rate an excellent camera 1 star regardless.

Eject Tape (Reply to this comment)
by rivrsdepinion
& Remove Cassette are not a unique problem to this particular Canon model dvd. We received a ZR-10 in 2001 and have only 20+ hours and have started to receive the "eject tape" message. The cost of this dvd was originally about $1000 (US) at Best Buy. While the quality of the picture and other features have made this recorder wonderful up to this point, it is now worthless to us without what I am sure will be a prohibitive, costly repair--with no guarantee the same thing won't happen again.

Re: Warranty (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the comment. You are right about electronic stuff breaking down!! So frustrating. I was willing to pay the extra cash for the pro-sumer gear thinking that it was made of higher quality instead of the cheap stuff. So now I am wondering what will break down on this thing next! Even more frustrating to find many other purchasers of this gear, with the same thing happening to them too!

Warranty (Reply to this comment)
by ellesboro
Y'know, I can fully understand what you are saying...This always happens with electronics, weither its with the manufactures warranty or with an extended warranty or service plan...they are rairly there when you need them...It sucks that even expensive pro-sumer camcorders have only a 1 year warranty, it's dumb...you pay $2000 you should get at least 2-3 years...My expensive PD170 cost me $4500 Cnd and that only has a 1 year warranty! It's dumb! Then Sony/Canon makes you pay another $400Cnd for an extended warranty...
